roof doesn't work - video inside - help pls!

So my battery went flat whilst working on fitting the Eisenmann exhaust to my Z4 M. When I managed to get it going again, the traction control light wouldn't go and the roof wouldn't go down. The traction control light went after turning off and starting up again, which is good..... but the roof won't work now?

The roof unlocks, button lights as per usual and the motor makes usual noise but just doesn't do anything. Here is a video to demo it:

I would have thought that the motor is ok given that it's making noise? Seems like a coincidence that battery went and now it won't go down?

ANY ideas before I take it to the stealers? :thumbsdown: :cry:
 
Have you tried manually assisting the roof, i.e. pushing it up to see if it starts moving by itself? Is the battery now fully charged?
 
I've given it a little push - but don't want to end up with a roof halfway down! I'll try again, but the battery is fine and charged.

Now that you mention it, my aircon has been playing up in terms of either really warm unless I put it on max cold? How would I be able to check or reset to get rid of transportation mode?
 
Checked the boot shelf/spacer is in position? I'm not sure but think there are other micro switches on the roof that could stop it functioning if they are out of place as well. Try lubricating the roof front rail mechanisms/slots and all frame hinges, both have sorted my roof panics in the past.
 
If the shelf was up the roof lights would go orange and the motor wouldnt make that noise....

I think you have pulled that little red cable in the boot which disconnects the motor from the roof! (to allow you to pull it up manually)... Its on the top of the boot near the shelf.

So I might have just fixed it...... hahaha how embarassing. Saved myself a heart attack of a bill too! I don't remember pulling that thing though?

Nice one :thumbsup: Admit it, who's not going give an unknown button or toggle a try? I just hope you don't work on aircraft or submarines though :rofl:
 
I dont remember reading about the red pull ring in the manual?-so it disconnects the motor to allow you to pull roof closed manually in the event of failure?

Mines in transport mode after letting the battery go flat over several months of non-use; symptoms are that it operates fine temperature-wise but won't go above second stage fan speed and the actual aircon switch/LED dosn't operate (although Auto mode does but only on fan speeds 1/2).....oh and heated rear window doesn't work either. Getting it reprogrammed next week :(

Nice to see a cheap and easy fix - not so common in a bmw :thumbsup:

Its certainly mentioned somewhere in my manual.. i saw that red thing pull handle when removed all the bits in my boot to fit my intravee... as it reminded me of an ejector lever!! You have to pull it quite hard to disconnect it though... not something you can do accidently though!

So dug the manual out to have a read... also found the manual fuel filler release in the boot behind the rear lights 8)
 
Mine has just missed a beat for the first time.

On pressing and holding the key, The windows went down, the roof unlocked and travelled about an inch, then stopped - although the motor could still clearly be heard.

I pressed to re lock the roof, and it locked perfectly, then tried to open it again and it went down better than Kathy Beale.

Any ideas ?

It's still under warranty and is in for an MOT on Saturday. Will the dealer take any notice if it's not playing up when I'm there ?
