Roof cylinders leaking

Hey guys, I've read many threads here about the roof not working but none seem to be the same problem that I have.
My roof stopped working, it unlatches and latches when I press the button but the roof doesn't go up or down, I have to do it manually and then press the button to latch it.
I took the car to a shop and they took it apart, they said that the motor is fine but the problem is the cylinders are leaking. When they put oil in the cylinders the roof works like 2 or 3 times and then the oil is drained again. They said BMW charges $540 for each cylinder(2).

Has anybody else had this problem with the roof? Cylinders leaking?? Is there a place where I can get these cylinders cheaper? or even used?
 
I haven't heard of cylinder problems, not that I have extensive experience. I suppose as E85s get older, it is inevitable that this would start popping up as a problem.

Seems a little odd both would be leaking, but I suppose it's possible they both had a slight leak for a while, then one went really bad and caused the noticeable failure. I can't believe they went through all the trouble to find the leaky cylinders, fill it with oil and reassemble, expecting them to work again. :headbang:

The list price for these things on realOEM.com is $485, for most parts, they can be found 10-20% below list. But if you apply the typical garage markup, $540 is in range, but not what BMW charges. You could try enquiring at scrap yards for used parts.

I have to wonder if there's any possibility of rebuilding these things, after all, the only problem is probably a perished seal. Considering we are supposed to replace the whole EPS column for a bad sensor, I imagine the answer is NO. But one has to wonder.
 
Have they seen the leak?

Odd it's leaking from both at same time

The leak could be elsewhere and running back down the lines to the cylinders that make it appear as if both are leaking
