Roof confusion!

Lets keep this simple.

My 53 reg E85 roof suddenly stopped working. The light next to the roof button just lit up orange when i pressed it. Having just left it for a few months over the winter, having read the forum it became apparent the issue was the shelf being up! I put the shelf down and the roof came down fine..... or so i thought! Unfortunately, i couldn't get the roof back up... i was getting a flashing red light. I then manually pulled the roof up, and after failing to lock it back into position with the allen key, i pressed the roof up button and it engaged for me. Great i thought - it's fixed! Wrong! Now i try to put the roof down, and it unlatched and the windows come down, i then hear the motor at the back of the car going, but the roof isn't going down!

HELP!!!!!!!

What do i do now?!!? It seems like the motor and everything is all good, it just can't quite get itself all together!

Thanks in advance.

I take it you have checked the shelf again,ie it's down ,the micro switch at the front is making contact.
If all is ok it points to the motor.I had the same on mine, there's a valve on the side of the motor which corrodes .

Thanks maxman

The problem appeared to be getting the roof down, this was resolved by simply putting the shelf down. It then went down fine. The flashing red light when trying to get it back up led me to manually pulling the roof up, and then i used the closing button to latch it to the windscreen. I can now unlatch it and then re latch it to the windscreen using the button. The issue is that after it has unlatched the roof isn't going down, although i can hear the motor going. Hopefully that suggests the motor is ok?

The shelf is definitely down, so i will need to check the micro switch. Any advice for a novice as to what i'm checking for?

Seems like the micro switch is ok, other wise is wouldn't have opened, check that the bypass ring is pushed in properly :)

I have a similar problem when I press to lower the roof the windows drop and it unlatches but doesn't kick the roof back as it should, the motor is spinning and the shelf is down in the boot...
Any help would be great

Again... check the bypass ring, ! Have you used the bypass function lately ? The brass button on the side of the hydro/motor assy could be seized in causing it to bypass the hydraulic fluid, the motor will spin, but no pressure will build up.

Is the bypass ring separate to the motor or attached ? It's just had a new motor

Hi, the bypass ring is connected to a cable which is connected to a lever which presses a brass button on the motor housing, if it's new then it should be ok, just make sure the cable is fully released (no tension on the cable).

Which lights do you have red or yellow ?
