Roof..Cleaning position

Hi All Hope we are all well. In the past when doing a 'through' clean (is there anything else)? i just stop the roof randomly to gain access to clean various parts of the car. Is this ok...or should i just stop it in specific positions...or not at all?

THanks..

The rear window i would operate until it's over the top then move it back towards stowed position then stop half way. It seems to hold pressure in the cylinder better giving a bit more time to work on it. If you just open half and stop, it will just drop back down.

Would that also be a good place to stop the mechanism in order to lube the many hinges or are they supposedly sealed for life?

This could be interesting. General wisdom has been to lubricate metal on metal points with white lithium grease, however RobbiZ4 has recently posted that the lubrication is good for life and shouldn't be touched. Personally I'd put 'good for life' in the same category as BMW's 'lifetime oil' in DCT's etc, but I have a huge amount of respect for Robbi's experience and knowledge of these vehicles, so...... :?

I only asked as I wasn't sure if that was a service item or not. My new purchase has a FSH, 4 of which were done at Sytner BMW but the last one was a place local to the previous owner of indeterminate ability. I know some non franchise places might miss some inspections due at service so I was thinking of making sure the roof mechanism was okay, as that's the main part that worries me

I lubricated all the roof joints with some oil, grease waste of time unless you can extract each pin to grease, no mechanical problems in 11 years of roof going up and down mostly daily in the summer months as my going to work car.

In fact i find the syringe from a refillable ink jet printer pack just right for blobbing oil on the joints all over the car where required.

Well, we already discussed it before:
avoid any grease in the roof, there are permanent washers mounted in any important joint.

So... any recommended oil?

My father came home with a very small bottle of teflon oil, i think it was like more expensive per ounce than gold.
What a load of crap that was, so don't use that.

Use any oil, it's not a Space shuttle.

Yes, how would it stay in the right place? :)

Why at all?
Well even if the bushes are sintered oil impregnated phosphor bronze they will wear and the clearances will become larger. So unlikely to seize, but why accept wear if a drop of oil reduces the wear and any slack in the system. I'm sure the bushes will probably last more than the life of the car.
Probably the satisfaction that at least you think you are helping the situation regards wear.

The placebo effect is very powerful...all my cars/bikes/planes ran better after fresh oil

Modern cars probably do as the oil is now used much more as a hydraulic fluid to control engine valves and variable timing.
When i first bought a MGTF the garage said the oil had been changed, after a few days it rattled away.
Changed to 0-40w and the tappet rattle went away.
