Roof catching on rear trim

Hi All

Annoying issue....

When opening the roof, the top of the glass for the rear window is catching on the rear interior trim behind the seats. Thinking this was the classic latch removal problem, I had it removed. :headbang:

Tested the roof and its catching definitely on the interior trim. Makes a right thump as it goes down the last 6 inches or so.

Found this picture - and its the grey trim in line with the latch. I no longer have the central latch:

Any ideas? It's driving me nuts and I dont want it wearing through or damaging the roof

It’s the latch you need to remove. Although mines a facelift it still had the latch which was marking the roof, so I removed it.
 
Yes that's removed now. The top of the roof window is catching on the plastic trim at the rear as it goes down now.
 
Perhaps a bit late, dont know if you had it sorted already.
I had the same issue (together with the stowage lock), turns out some of the rings on the trim were broken.
Ordered a new piece of trim from BMW (only 20 something euro) and no issues since :)
 
It's still doing it, if i push the glass of the screen as the roof is going down to the back, it clears ok by millimetres.

Almost like something isn't aligned right.

Which interior part are you referring to?

Know it's an old post but had this issue as well.
Simple fix. It's likely to be that the rear tray has spring loaded sides. These springs need oil/lubrication. If not oiled they stay upright and don't allow the window to seat correctly causing the window to force the roof fabric forward and catch on the rear bulkhead. You can lube from within the boot. Easy fix.
 
Just has my hydraulic pipes replaced at the excellent RBM Hampshire but now I have this problem that the roof is making a horrible sound and the glass window is catching exactly as described here. What exactly is the rear tray? I will oil this up and hopefully fix the problem. Car has been off the road for about 4 years so got various little problems I’m working through.

I have this problem and have removed the rear trim and it does not have any broken tabs where the rivets go. I think it is just a 20 year old top sagging and hitting the rear trim when going down, my fix is to leave the rear plastic trim off until I replace the top with a new one in the future.

Did you check the hinged pieces on the top outer edges of the parcel shelf tray?
If the stick up then they prevent the roof folding all the way into the space. As the material gets stopped to high it then pushes back against the glass, effectively moving it forwards slightly so it catches the trim.
The clunk over the last few inches is when the weight of the glass, plus the effort of the roof motor, finally manages to push those flaps down flat.
A simple solution is to take out the parcel shelf, remove the springs on the flaps and tape them down, then refit the parcel shelf.
As far as I can tell, their only purpose is to stop you seeing the internal parts above the side shelves when you look in from the boot.

To test this theory you can simply remove the parcel shelf, use a suitable nut or small block of wood etc. to push in the micro-switch, then operate the roof and see if it closes properly.
