Hi,

Red Led flashing, Door image on dash panel and sound bong when buttons pressed.
Image Roof#1 shows position when roof stopped.
Image Roof#2 shown position when roof close was pressed.
Image Roof#3 shows current position - back window not closed.

Back window roof section stuck just above its normal locked position.
No movement when up or down button pressed.
No movement of roof, windows or boot release using key fob.

Currently back window panel almost in closed position but not locked.
Can be lifted up a few inches.
Boot closed and all windows in down position.

Added push button emergency boot open facility in passenger glove box. Image Button.
Can pop boot lid when usual options not operating.

Used Carly to check for error codes - nothing being reported. Green Light against Roof test.

Can anyone suggest what to check or any way to frig the system to operate?

The roof #2 picture shows the trunk section not being fully closed and the window panel being prevented from closing. Is something in the boot obstructing? Can Carly report the on/off conditions of the roof sensors?

Also, Carly is not a very good tool for convertible top issues. ISTA is best, followed by Bimmer geeks Protool, then Foxwell and finally Bimmerlink.

Agree there should be a code for that. Mine was similar and post a fault code.

Stevo

What fault codes were presented and what fixes did you do to eliminate the similar problem.

Carly is not the best but it did flag previous roof problem "A68D - Microswitch, roof shell 2 closed, right"
resulting in changed microswitches so I expected it to show some error to cover the current flashing Led issue.

In searching the forum further (all evening) I have come across another possible help .... Call the RAC.
They have the most up to date code readers.

Don't expect them to repair the fault but it may be worth a call to get to the appropriate error code.

I reckon you have a dodgy rear (bootlid) microswitch. If one is OK and the other is inconsistent that could result in the fault but not necessarily show a fault on a reader.

One faulty microswitch, if the opposite side is OK, can confuse the electronics so it doesn't know whether it needs a s**t or a haircut. IME

Or possibly, looking at the pictures, you have a fluid leak on one of the hydraulic rams.

Update -

RAC driver arrived this evening.
Luck on my side for once .... he was an ex BMW mechanic of 15 years experience.
Knew the various issue with the Z4 roof.

Plugged in his Code reader only to confirm my Carly read out that there were no issues with the Roof switched or hall sensors.

After performing various movements with the roof and boot lid he eventually found a burst hydraulic pipe.
This was located at the passenger side near the rear cluster.

Pondrew was close with his diagnosis.
> dodgy rear (bootlid) microswitch - it was actually the hydraulic pipe.

Options now -
Replace burst pipe myself.
Don't think it should be too difficult to change a pipe ... 2 connections and follow the same route.
-famous last words :) Swap and top up the fluid.

or take it to a BMW stealer ship.

Is there a parts list of hydraulic pipes and best source to to purchase?

thanks again for your feedback.

With my limited knowledge a trip to BMW will leave you limbless. I don't think this a cheap or easy diy fix.

I'd try to avoid a stealer ship if at all possible for the sake of your credit card!

Aren't there any ex-BMW Indies near you? That's where I'd be going.

Or maybe you should have asked the RAC man if he did private jobs!

Recommend the Zed shed..he’s done many hydraulic hoses on the E89s..

After pulling the boot interior apart to view the damage, I have decided to go with the professional repair approach and have booked a slot with Mike @ The Zed Shed.

Not cheap but from members feedback he does an excellent job thus a no brainer decision.

I'm sure one of the indy BMW specialists in Glasgow does roof repairs on E89's, remember speaking to someone on one of the breakfast meetings about it

Not aware of any guys that cope with burst hoses?

Update -

Visited Mike at the Zed Shed as per groups advice.

And we are operational once more.

Great work by Mike.

I would recommend him if you have any roof issues.

Till the next time ….

Cheers
