So, Mrs P & I are heading off to Rome during March for a few nights & really looking forward to it now having never been before, anybody here have any favourite restaurants serving authentic Italian food that they can recommend?

I'm aware that nowhere is going to be cheap, just don't want to get ripped off with tourist rates if I can help it.

Osteria Barberini was my favourite place, right in the centre and sensibly priced.
Friendly and understand English

Rome is fantastic :!:

We'd never been before so bought a 24hour Red Bus rover ticket on Day 1.
Did the whole circuit then realised that it's actually quite a small city. After that we walked everywhere for 4 days and found some lovely little cafes, bars and restaurants one block back from the main thoroughfares.
There are cheap places to eat, and there are expensive ones. I cannot recommend any since it is 4 years since we were there.
However I would recommend just sitting in Piazza Navona to enjoy a glass wine and coffee for €25 while watching the world go by, then find a little cafe round the corner and have a full bottle with free nibbles at €8 :D
If you haven't read Dan Brown's "Angels & Demons" I would also recommend you do so before your visit - it made the city so much more interesting.
Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy Rome as much as we did. It's definitely on our list of places-to-go-back-to-when-we've-been-to-all-the-other-places

Absolutely agree Barberini is the very best, when I worked with finmeccanica it was my monthly evening....

Hi Tony, we're going for the first time in March as well, won't be able to spot the zed though (not a bad thing... I'm told watching parking techniques in Rome is quite an experience!).

i stayed in hotel rex, a few years ago. rome is lovely but metal expensive to eat if you dont find places

i dont know the name of the place but hotel rex is on via torino on the next street over, via principe amedo there is a great little place. it was recommended by some Italian friends, i found it on google maps its called la grotta attriciana. the food was great wine was cheap.

we also went to another recommendation but this one i cant find on maps. basically as you look at the pantheon on the left hand side there is a place called cafe minerva, around there is an alley way with the restaurant at the bottom neatly tucked away. they had a guy on the street with a menu on the board but it wasn't overly obvious.

both did seemed to be mostly populated by locals and for the price the food was great.

another tip for Rome is don't bother buying water from a vendor. every fountain/monument/statue to some god which are on pretty much every street corner has water fountains on. these are fed by the main city water supply which is safe to drink. so just take a decent water bottle with you and fill up from them.

My sister lives in Rome and has done for a number of years. Her/my recommendation would be Ai Marmi, in Trastevere or Dar Poeta also in Trastevere. Its best to go before 19.30 or you are likely to have a wait

Best laugh we had was in a family run restaurant to the right of the colonades at St Peters, just through the city wall arches. Thought we had landed in an italian soap. Father and son shouting at each other mother gets involved, father while still giving it lip walks out. Meanwhile boy serving us who was not family explained they were always like this. Father eventually returned and the all sat round and had there late lunch.
