Romantic day trip short drive from London - any ideas?

Yes I get this but where exactly do people visit? What is renowned? I've heard it's quaint etc but I've just never understood where to set my sat nav for.
 
A few popular places:

Malmesbury, Tetbury (where I am), Cirencester, Cheltenham, Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Stow on the Wold, Lechlade, Painswick, Burford.

More southerly is Bath.

Google a few of them to see what appeals.
 
Hire a motor boat on the Thames at Henley - pack Pimms/champagne and a picnic - all much less effort than punting!!
 
I vote Dover - Dover castle really is well worth visiting and, and there WAS a great little luxury b&b in a manor house (now seems defunct, but I am sure there are similar ).
 
Four Seasons in Hampshire. If u book a massage you can use pools including outdoor spa thing. Lunch included. Pleasant drive A3 and hogs back.

Henley is a great idea, very Rah Rah, and the regatta has just happened so all the bunting and quintessentially British decor will still be out. If you eat lunch go to the little angel (next to the cricket ground) they do fantastic food.

Thinking about it I'm quite West really, near Heathrow and this is a bit of a trek for a day and we have Zedfest on Saturday and Regents park open air theatre on Thurs evening so won't be able to overnight. Good idea though.

I can't remember the exact price but if you google Hobbs of Henley I'm sure it'll tell you. I think it's £12 but I can't remember if that is for an hour or half hour

Depends on your choice of champagne... :rofl:

Its not cheap - about £30/hr IIRC, been a while since I did it. Was a wonderful way to spend a few hours though, going through locks (which I did crash into)... lounging about in the sun, spotting kingfishers etc etc

Nope - just book and turn up and smile nicely - look competent when pulling out the dock then just mess about when out of sight - feel a quote from wind in the willows coming on....
