Rolling Road

Was at a rolling road day yesterday, I didn't bother putting my car on as it is standard.

One of the other guys had chipped his Z4m roadster, superchips I think and it only put out 325.8 at the fly. The ambient was 26c so was pretty hot but even so I was surprised by this output. Does anyone have any comments or experience to offer.

Is the chip likely to be the problem here, the guy stated he had felt it was less responsive after fitting.

He could just take it off and reset it and then see what they car puts out.

The flywheel power is not measured, just calculated from the wheel torque, based on a standard calculation. If the car is tied down too tightly it can under-rear, or over-read if it's loosely tied. I've always been wary of getting mods done by people with their own dynos purely for that reason - they can put £3k of gear on the car and claim 50bhp, but it's only their dyno that says that, and when you go elsewhere you seem to have lost 30bhp somewhere :P

Yeah there are lots of variables to take into account that is for sure. Why I never bothered putting my own one on.

Only worth dyno testing a car for comparison if:
1. YOu can do before and after comparisons on the same day fairly quickly between each run (so a few runs with original chip and then a few runs with aftermarket chip).
2. You know and trust the dyno operator.
3. There are other cars similar to yours to compare against on the day, but even then that isn`t scientific (different fuel, wear rates etc).

I heard the S54 in the M3`s developed 318-322BHP on average with a few miles on them. I also heard the Zeds develop more due to a better exhaust, not sure how true this is though.

I don`t like off the shelf chips, much better off getting a custom chip made up by someone with a great reputation.

Hi Ali,

It was the PH rolling road day. Wasn't my car was another members roadster, he had chipped it and said himself it felt worse for doing so.

I'll think about it but mine feels very lively to be honest.

There's an old thread on here somewhere about a dyno day that me and sixspeed attended along with a couple of e46 M3's and that certainly was the case on the day, both Zeds were about 15-20hp up on the M3's.

If anyone can find that thread I would be very happy!!

I have a friend that is adament that the S54 will never make its stated output would be nice to show him that the Zeds are different!!

Here you go

and I'm sure andy won't mind another vid of his car on the net

Makes mine sound a bit on the quiet side.
