Rocker cover questions

Hi all,

I am in need of replacing the rocker cover gasket due to a leak which seems to be getting worse. A few questions if anyone can help at all:

What is a good replacement to get, I can see Ellring ones on eBay or should I get an official bmw part?

If a spark plug is covered in oil upon removal should it be replaced or just wiped down? I had the spark plugs changed a few thousand miles ago so very new and there was a tiny bit of oil in the first socket which may have gotten worse.

Is there any specific tools I need other than the usual socket set etc?

Thanks all

Elring or febi bilstein are good options.
Make sure you you also get the bolt grommets with the gasket kit.
It's good practice to use some decent gasket paste around the half moons and corners.
Make sure that all mating surfaces are absolutely squeaky clean before offering up the gasket and replacing the cam cover.
Pattern torquing when replacing is advised.
Clean ur sparkers with a blast of carb cleaner and you're good to go.

I have a monster thread here somewhere documenting my own replacement if you can find it.
Good luck.

Just a thought OP, but it would help to know which engine your car has.

If it is a facelift model with the N52 engine you'll need a new set of fixing bolts for the cover as they are aluminium single use ones.

Thanks for the info both.

It’s a 3.0si so thanks for the heads up on the bolts. I don’t suppose you have an part number for those?

Thanks

No, sorry I don't as mine hasn't needed doing (yet).

But you should be able to find it on a site like realoem or similar. It's possible the gasket set might include them, so worth checking. And be careful tightening them as I don't think they take much torque - plus you'll need a star drive socket for them!

Good luck.
