Rocker cover gasket

Now I'm concerned! I've just changed my Rocker Cover gasket, and it too didn't seem to fit very well, lots of material sticking out and like you, it wouldn't sit flush. I got it from BMW, so it should be the right one!

I tightened everything down and it all looked fine, but now I'm worried that it's the wrong one. I'll keep an eye out for leaks!

I think I might have been over cautious as the gasket supplied with the new stark cover also doesn't fit great and the same with the elring gasket I have, however it does seem to compress by hand in the new cover better than my old cover, whilst I await my exchanged parts I'm gonna see if this elring gasket will fit with my old cover when torqued down,

This is a thread that convinced me my gasket was wrong but having now had both gaskets for an m54 they both look identical so I'm still none the wiser.

Use genuine BMW gaskets...
My mechanic attempted 3 times to get the Stark gasket to seal.
4th time he used the BMW gasket and it sealed, 1st go.

Always use Elring brand, done a few now and had no returns including my own 2.5.
If the cam cover is fitted with round rubber seals under the retaining bolts (15 of them) they should be replaced with the new main gaskets. Old ones go hard and don't compress well with a knock on effect on the main gaskets providing a correct seal when they are torqued up to spec.
Elring do a gasket set which includes the round rubber seals. Also remember to apply gasket sealant around the half moon shapes at the front and rear of the cam cover where the gasket changes direction and between the vanos at the front. I use Blue Hylomar on the ones I do.

Colb any idea what the correct elring gasket is for a 2004 2.2. And should it sit flush in the cover or is there any protrusion for the gasket to compress.

I have two different part number elring gaskets and they both look the same and both don't sit flush in the cover, on real oem there is a stated change in covers from 2002 onwards I think

Always best to check part number using your last seven of your Vin number on the Realoem parts site so you get the correct one.
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/select
It will list what was fitted at the factory when your car was built.

According to Realoem the gasket x8r sent me is incompatible however I've fitted this gasket and it compressed down nicely and appears leak free, autodoc are sending me a Vaico cover like I originally ordered will see what that looks like and fit in the spring now.
