Rocker cover gasket replacement, whats needed?

ok so when i 1st got my Z it had the dreaded rocker cover gasket leak, spoke to my garage and they ordered a new part which turned up but turned out to be the wrong gasket (stupid suppliers fault, not my mechanics, they said they had an in house cross referencing part number issue... anyway...) so as my cover was off, it was a sunday and we needed to do something we patched it up with the old gasket and some sealant (tiger seal maybe? cant remember) and he said it would hold but suggested i get it done asap.... anyway i have left it till now and can smell the tell tail signs again of oil.

question is what do i need for it, might possibly attempt it myself or at least get all the correct parts myself to save at the garage.

cover gasket part number is: 11120035738 (mine is a 2008 2.0i so only a 4 pot.... N46 engine i believe?)

is there any other bits and bobs i need while its apart that's worth while getting at the same time? also wheres best/cheapest to get from and any preferred makes etc?

spoke to BMW and OEM replacement is £60.50p

im sure i saw somebody mention to replace extra rubber bits while its all off, shaped circles i think from memory? (altho it could have been for the bigger engines)
 
As above.

Dab of RTV around the corners and you'd be okay.

It's very easy to do, just take your time with it and be careful when taking the old gasket off.

Remember to make sure the gasket is sealed well, use RTV at the edges.. it's what caused my latest video

thanks igeak thats perfect...... im gonna attempt this myself :fuelfire:

as mines only the 4 pot im guessing its just the same really, but about the rubber washers.... im guessing i need to try and make sure i get a set which includes them?
 
I think there's some screws or bolts that need replacing as they are only supposed to be single use, just trying to think back to when I had mine done, I was toying with the idea of doing it myself but then wanted some other bits done so took it to my mates garage and got him to do all the work. Glad I did as there was also another oil leak that I wouldn't have spotted
 
yea im tempted to just take the gasket to my mates garage as like u say its easier and he has a better eye than me... but the video above does show how easy it can be.

but would want it to be 100% so probs best to take to garage thinking about it so he can use the correct torques and sealants etc which i dont have.

any ideas on the 1 use bolts/washers welcome?
 
If you're gonna do the job might as well include the rubber washers. But I wouldn't cry if (don't ask me how I know) you drop some rubber washers where you can't get them and you reuse some old ones.. just not worth saving a few bucks over as the whole kit was maybe $20.

I'll be tackling this on mine tomorrow or next few days, whenever the parts show up, as I have exactly the same oily smoke you had at the same location near the back. and rear top left side of engine (looking rearwards).

What was the cause of having to redo the gasket 2nd time? seating position off for gasket or not enough sealant?

I'll be using Permatex 80019 Aviation Form-A-Gasket No.3H Sealant and Permatex 80011 Form-A-Gasket No.2C Sealant on the half-moons and corners but I see you used RTV red. Significant difference? I saw the Mercedes guy on youtube recommending the Permatex aviation stuff mainly to avoid sealant ingress and decided to go with that.
