Roadster or Convertible?

Now, I know I'm an E89 owner posting 'on the other side' but this seemed the better place to raise this question.

I have seen it explained that a convertible is a saloon model that has then had a soft-top version added, whereas a roadster has been designed from the outset as a soft-top. This makes sense.
However, if BMW then saw fit to bring along a coupe version of a roadster, are they in effect reversing the saloon to convertible principle and are E85s then relegated to convertible status, therefore making E89s and G29s the only proper roadsters. :poke:

Please reply in the lighthearted manner in which this was posted........................ yup, it's a slow day at work. :D

I thought roadsters by definition were 2 seaters with convertible cars being 4+ (ala 3 series) :?

Oh well, there you go then. 3 minutes to become controversial.

There's an old Scottish saying that is very appropriate when someone is talking out their a**e.... away and don't be f***ing daft!

You drive an E89 which is basically a 3 series in drag so therefore must either be a girl, have no idea about cars or quite possibly have been on the drink since early this morning.

Come back to us when you've sobered up or got more than 200bhp!

Did they do a 2.0is as it's not coming up on The Google?!

I’ve got a 20i with more than 200bhp, now get back in the kitchen :poke:

I refer my angry friend to the last sentence of my original post.
It seems I'm going to need a bigger boat. :D

I was joking. Forgot to add the

You could put the roof down on the 3 series in drag and drive it into the sea, nearest canal, municipal boating pond or reservoir. It'd certainly be a good test of the floating abilities of the E89!

Fair enough

Goes to show how plain text can be misinterpreted without a smiley or two to replace facial expression and tone of voice.

And to be fair, I'm really bored at work so just went fishing

I'll consult the Z4 Bible when I get home to see if there's a definition of Roadster in it.

BMW Z3 and Z4: The Complete Story https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1785002767/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_NJjODbR2ER6SJ

I read my assumed definition on a thread here some time back.................. however, a swift 'google' seems to be more in support of Mr Bear's 2-seat v 4-seat theory.

Maybe someone told BMW that they had a great design with the E85 concept but that they should 'keep a lid on it'................... and something got lost in translation, hence the tin-top arrived?

I think in this case I should have looked for one with a little guy running in, lobbing a grenade and running away

Soft top is a roadster without a shadow of a doubt. I like the coupe but when it comes to the summer and you can take the roof off you might as well have a 4 seater instead
