The A50 it's like a mine field £495 road tax it's a joke ,where's the money going ?

I think I read in Auto Express mag a few years ago less that a quarter of road tax revenue is spent on the roads, my Dad told me Winston Churchill decided to raise it to fund the Second World War.

it's not road tax, it's vehicle excise duty.

the sooner you guys realise that, the less angry you will be about the state of the roads.

Really? Is it too much to ask to drive on roads that won't knacker your car or injure/kill cyclists/bikers?

Tax aside, why should I not feel angry about the condition of the roads. ??

I have this

But it won't make much difference, they would rather give our money away to bloody Johnny Foreigner.

Who cares what it's called, it's a rip off as is just about everything else the government gets their sticky fingers into

if you don't like the uk, move to some war torn country in the middle east

i'd rather pay taxes and live in relative safety, than have to worry about getting blown up whilst walking down the street.

Whatever its called, I think most people (this is my opinion anyway) believe that the annual tax disc money is for maintaining the roads.

Its blatantly clear that is not the case, but it makes sense....you use the road - you pay to maintain it....via tax disc.

If not used on the roads, what is it subsidising?

people on benefits, probably.

what about cars that are exempt from this so called 'road tax'? they also use the roads, so your argument doesn't make sense.

True about the tax exempt cars.

The government are hell bent on using the environment as an excuse to raise money......cars that produce more CO2 etc pay more. Fuel tax is justified by saying people should use public transport.

End story is we all pay more, either in tax disc or fuel tax.

Everyone who uses the road should pay towards its upkeep, simple really...even cyclists! I guess if fuel tax was used to maintain roads, then tax free cars would pay as well.

Respective governments have done such a good job of conning the punters with this environmental nonsense, which has everyone buying 600cc euroboxes, that they have a decreasing revenue from VED.

No doubt we can expect VED to increase on anything over 1 litre in future to redress the balance.

And where's it spent? It just goes into the central pot to waste on various cobblers that governments deem so necessary

Sorry Ben g you will need to explain that... Not sure how being concerned about the state of the roads, and where our Tax Revenue is spent, translates into not liking the UK, and are you saying that because you pay taxes it makes the UK a safe place to live.??

This thread is like a can of worms ... I'm sure we could all go on forever about it. And unfortunately I doubt things will improve.

This is kind of off topic but really fires me up - home to preston (parents and mates still live up there) is around 220 miles, at a stab in the dark say £65-70 in fuel going carefully with economy in mind. That's sat in the comfort of a BMW and takes around 3 hr 45. Now consider the train (which to save miles on the car etc i'd genuinely consider) is £98 and takes just under 5 hours!!!!! Sat next to some scrot usually and would have to linger at readng or birmingham for a change in the cold. Seriously? And add a passenger to your car journey, halve the cost and it makes public transport even more ridiculous. Deep breath.

So did we and it didn't make any sense. :D

It should be scrapped altogether and put on fuel instead. I'm sure we'd then moan about fuel prices even more but imo that is a fairer way of taxing use of the roads. If someone owns 3 cars because they choose to do so, they can't be driving them all at once but I still have to pay road tax on them all. If I was doing 40k motorway miles a year I'd probably buy a 318d or something and pay next to no road tax, as I am sure a lot of people who do those sort of miles do. Yet I'm doing 10k a year and paying more road tax :scratchhead:
