Road tax system needs changing

That's the problem; under the "political correctness" foisted on us, people have been unable to talk openly about uncontrolled immigration, because it has been the lefties who have created the situation that discussing "immigration" is euphemistically the same as "racism". This is NOT the same thing at all. We live on an Island and it's FULL.

yep, the dependants show no sign of independance so tax does become an ever more sensitive subject, i'd pay more road tax if it was being spent on road improvements, but, clearly, it isn't.

On the subject of what we get for our tax. I read an interview with Abramovitch, (Russian oligarch) He said he likes the UK because when he flies in 'he feels safe'. I think that is one of our least appreciated achievements.

I think that's down to the fact that we're an apathetic lot and that we like law&order.

yep, not sure how much of that is down to the tax we pay and how much is down to the culture inherent in the country...

Just to be perfectly clear. Please don't misconstrue my statements as being Anti UK in any manner.
No offence taken. Don't worry, there's a lot we hate about our country.

Historically, we've had high taxation here for a long time, and in fact it used to be at 99% for the very rich in the 1960/70s. The nouveau rich in that bracket moved abroad (i.e pop and film stars) and the aristocrats kept their wealth in Trusts to avoid tax.

Tony B.liar and his cronies have destroyed the UK, by developing a "client state", which has effectively created a sizeable proportion of the electorate which is reliant on the "state" for either their employment or benefits, and thus will vote Labour to retain their respective incomes. Mass uncontrolled immigration was part of this policy (i.e. import voters). At the same time, B.liar and Mandelson were courting anyone with great wealth in order to feather their own nests (since they were unable to create their own wealth from real earnings) and have created a culture of corruption in the UK, which has led to our banking collapse from which NOBODY has been imprisoned, and which has cost the tax payer (working and middle classes) a fortune. Why did B.liar move out of politics when he ceased to be PM other than to personally capitalise on the foundations that he'd put in place whilst he was screwing the UK for his own ends as PM?

You know. You could replace the names in your story with any of the politicians names from the US. And the ONLY thing that would have changed in your story would be the names. Same identical narrative here.

Cripes, I thought I'd possibly open up an environmental debate with the topic. Surprised (perhaps naively) to come back to see party politics, tax evasion, benefits culture, immigration, (not) racism, and a history lesson reminder!

Based on rumours of even greater road tax rises from April I've just spent £9 a week for a year but all in one go (sounds easier than £475)

I don't think Clarkson is trustworthy. He tried to block a public footpath because he thought his privacy was more important than people being able to walk the shoreline of his estate. He puts himself first. We have enough politicians with that mindset. He is an accomplished op-ed writer, good at his job, but we have no idea what he really thinks. But we do know that he doesn't like plebs on his land.

Tiff Needell seems a better bet to me.

Road tax prices for any one with a Z4M are slap in the face on a annual basis. I, like many on here did fewer than 4k a year and despised stumping up nearly 500 quid a year for a very unfair and completely flawed system.
Its one of the reasons I didn't buy another Z4MC recently

Regarding J. Clarkson, he's a Fucking idiot. His sense of humour is basically insulting people or bullying them, I remember when he chucked a pen at lan Hislop on have I got news for you and drew blood. Or the time he introduced a car on top gear and poked a audience member in the face.
Weapons grade bell end

As an OAP, I couldn't afford to keep all my 'toys' on the road if I still lived in the UK!
In France there is no annual Road Tax, just a one-off fee when the vehicle is registered. Okay, there are tolls to pay on the motorways, but you don't have to use them.
Z3, Z4, Wrangler Jeep and twelve bikes - I dread to think what that lot would cost in Road Tax.
Scorp.

I agree with the comments regarding the welfare state and public sector workers (I am a public sector worker) how can you have masses of public sector jobs with no private sector funding it. Ultimately job losses/ or a reduction in living standards are the only way it will be corrected unless they find a way of getting investment from
abroad into the UK.

Tax is regressive, in the UK compulsory tax on jobs, travel, etc contribute to the problem.

You get taxed at the point of earning considerably and then again whilst purchasing. Tax on jobs should be reduce so those that are prudent and don't spend can see more of there money and people that do spend more (as they have a higher disposable income) will ultimately pay more tax anyhow through duty, VAT, etc.

Reducing petrol cost, etc would boost the ability of people to travel and energy such as gas/electric should be created not purchased so the UK could be self sufficient which should be possible considering the relatively small population.

The main problem is this should have started around 10 years ago when money was available rather than feeding into the state and public sector.

Water flows in the path of least resistance so if you offer people housing, child/health care and money to have luxuries TV, Car, Holidays, etc whilst not having to work then a certain demographic will abuse this to the point the system doesn't work which is about where we are now. The government is damned if they do and damned if they don't as workers/ non-workers are reliant on both sides of the system........

It's best not to think about it too hard unless you're going to start a revolution.

The average person likely to be using the forum on PAYE may well be into the 40% tax band. With NI as well we're all losing between a third and a half of our income before we start

Then you pay another 20% VAT.
Fuel tax
Insurance tax
Road tax
Car tax (if you're lucky enough to buy a new one)

There was an article that I now can't find that said that low income families in the UK were paying over 70% of their income as tax.

We really do need a change, but we've voted in a system we can't get rid of :headbang:

I agree should be based on usage and not just emissions alone. I like you do 2-3k a year in the zed but thats why I strategically went against an M.

Having said all that, enforcing a usage based system will prove tough unless we do have a tracker fitted to every car and then there will be all the other big brother issues associated with that..
it could work if linked to the MOT, mileage from previous year didctates the years road tax

the whole green agenda is totally flawed imo, green is seen as good so is used as a massive money raising monster for governments, like a runaway train that no one can now get off. anyone who even rationally questions it is stamped into silence and ridiculed as a heretic. carbon carbon carbon is the mantra, when they couldnt prove global warming it suddenly became climate change , man made of course, when everyone knows the climate warms and cools in cycles over millenia, and that humans have moved out of britain as 7 times due to ice ages, and then the proof from dredging the channel that there was a tropcal climate with elephants ,tigers etc.ant vitually any eco development is waved through planning with any objection labeled nimbyism, wind farms are sneakily passed by getting every small farmer to apply for one turbine, to avoid local opposition to what is suddenly a ten turbine wind farrm through the back door. conversely, when we applied for a small granny annexe for terninally ill mother in law, is was eventually passed with stipulation that it can not be rented for profit and couldnt have a juliet balcony as it was'nt in keeping, even though it is not visible to traffic or othr properties.I will continue to run my M for as long as i can afford to do so because for now ,I can. the fact that I do 3K a year for 450 quid a year ransom, whilst my green wife is rewarded with 30 quid a year road tax doing 30k a year, who is more polluting ?the morons in government will eventually price us off the road, so enjoy your cars while you can, in fact , after breakfast i am going to fire up the m and kick its arse in the name of freedom, Happy Hooning :headbang: :driving:   ps dont get me started on the third 6hectare solar farm suddenly appearing within a mile of us, you know, the ones we are all forced to fund through our electric meters < Right , thats it ! I'm going to press the sport button too !!! see how they like them apples !!! :dizzy:

I'm with you IKZ4, nearly 40,000 miles in the A5 and under 5000 in the ///M, it grates on me too but we just have to pay up, albeit through gritted teeth, if it was £1000 per year I'd still pay, I'm not going to let the government make the decision on what I drive.

Likewise.....
why should we be dictated to by a government who wants us all driving 1.0l citycars with start-stop or "efficient" (small)diesel hatches.
I had the pleasure, lol,of having such a car on loan recently(punto with stop-start)..was a gutless pita and even my wife said she felt so much frustration when she drove it that it gave her road rage due to never being able to overtake anything :headbang:

My wife has a Golf 1.4 turbo/supercharged one that has 170bhp(std),and does 16k per yr,pays 185 r/tax while i pay 475 to do 6-7k per yr in my z4.
Given i do less than half my wifes mlg,and the diff in co2 between them,i polute less than she does..yet pay alot more for doing so.
Whats worse,some1 i know has a Mondeo tdci estate they use for business, doing 25-30k per yr,yet only pay £30 yr r/tax!! Again, polluting way more than me,and paying way less for it :headbang:
Its time this government sorted this unfairness out

Simple: stop voting Labour. They spend every penny they can take off you and then borrow a load more on top. They always have done and always will. They then spend that money putting all the scroungers who vote for them in well paid public sector jobs that we don't need.

Maybe this country will wake up one day but I won't hold my breath.

Didnt vote Labour last time(tho i have before),but the Tory/lib-dem alliance is just as bad,OG/Steve,as they will continue to take Billions in roadtaxes, fuel duties, etc and spend only a fraction of this back on actual roads/repairs,etc :headbang:

Unfortunately,no political party are that good once they get in,imho
