road tax monthly debit

My car has been Sorn'd since November - intend to tax it on Tuesday 1st March using the monthly DD option - I can see it's easy to set up but is it just as simple to stop it if I sell the car or Sorn it again later in the year ? If you leave it to the last day of the month can it be stopped immediately without hitch ?

A friend of mine was saying he cancelled the direct debit via the bank and then they just send a letter notice to let you know it is no longer taxed, I think that would be the quickest way to stop it. I'm not sure if it can be cancelled online on the gov website

You can cancel online BUT it takes effect immediately so if your going to use it for the whole month then I would strongly suggest that you also cancel the direct debit at your bank so that they cannot claim any money.

It's worth noting that in order to successfully cancel a Direct Debit before it's due you should do it by noon the working day before it is due to be taken.

On the off chance you leave it too late the DVLA should refund you, some people have had a refund quickly and others have had a bit of a wait. If you really don't want to wait then you can ask your bank to reclaim the money under the direct debit guarantee. They usually credit your account the same day and then reclaim the money from the DVLA

Thanks for advice - on reflection I might just tax it for 12 months as I usually do - a lot less complicated than stopping the DD at the bank etc - did this last year online and then reclaimed the tax when I Sorn'd the car . As I am still undecided whether to sell or not a monthly DD seemed attractive.
