Road NOISE! :(

Hey Guys

I noticed recently that my car produces alot of road noise once I hit about 40 to 50MPH.

Also that I have a load of new rattles and vibrations which as you can imagine is very annoying. A rattle seem to be coming from drivers right hand vent I think. One other rattle is from the roof on the passengers side.

I do drive on some very rubbish roads around Woking, Guildford and Egham areas.

Any ideas on how to fix these small issues.

Thanks Guys

Road noise is usually associated with the type of tyre you have. Since Nov 2012 it is now law for the new tyre to have a manufacturer's sticker indicating the rating in this respect (and wet grip and fuel efficiency rating).

this is interesting stuff I had no idea that tyres could have this affect.

I'm not sure why they have bothered with regulating tyre noise. The noise that results from the road surface has a far bigger influence on things.

Comparing our roads to those in Holland and Denmark recently; was like chalk and cheese, or more accurately rubble (UK roads) and billiard boards (Denmark and Holland). Not sure what they were doing; or if where I was was typical, but talk about smooth, quiet lovely roads with little traffic.

Actually I've just answered my own question; easier to pick on the manufacturers rather than national/local governments I guess.

Tyres can make a massive difference to road noise, I had a problem with rear tyres wearing out quick so I swapped from Bridgestone to a cheap pair of nankang ns2 so I could get to the bottom of the wear problem.

The tyres when new were actualy ok but after a few mm of wear they sounded like my wheel bearings had gone, and they introduced strange frequencies into the chassis causing the plastics inside the car to resonate, swapped back to Bridgestone and it's silent again.
The cheaper the tyre the less steel in it and the tread moves about causing the noise, the more expensive the tyre the quieter it will be.

I always use Bridgestone tyres, not cheap but well worth the money.

I have tried all kinds of tyres.....

Conti's and Falkens where noisy on my Z.....Vreds where the best..

The other thing is that the Z has very little sound insulation and your sat near to the rear wheels...

I loved my Z's but road noise was one of the things that used to get on my nerves..

Yes, I can agree. I currently have a noisy set of Falken 439s as winters. I especially notice it at higher speeds, or in the last few feet before coming to a stop. That rolling noise drives me mental, but I'm liking the traction in all the wet weather. Ironically it's my first year with winter wheels and the temps are hovering around 9-10 degrees.
