    for me.

Depends on the location. But as a driver & cyclist, on roads where the speed limits have been low not having had road markings repainted after surfacing work has been a positive improvement.

Can't argue with that logic.

I certainly think more about what might be coming around the bend ahead when there is no marking on the roads around here. Bare in mind they are talking about lightly trafficked rural roads. Problem arrives when conditions are poor and you can't follow the road if there is no line.

A lot of the roads in Edinburgh are due to become 20mph from this summer however right outside where I live the road markings have been scrubbed off by drivers who insist on trying to make the north bound side of the road 2 lanes not realising that cars A) there is a protruding bus stop on the south bound side and the road was designed so traffic could flow around any buses pulled in and B) there is a junction (into where I live) which is signed to be kept clear for emergency vehicles and the road is designed so cars can be waiting to turn in and again traffic can still flow on he south bound side.

Unfortunately many people have been hit exiting out junction by people flying down on the wrong side of the road and then people sitting correctly waiting to pull in also get abuse from the same morons that think they are entitled to drive down the wrong side due to the very, very faint or even non existent road markings.

I doubt the 20mph limit will make any difference to people's driving, just like lack of lines as many people seem to lack any real concept of space and exactly how big their cars is and their positioning in the road. They probably also lack any regard for anyone else other than themselves, as long as their alright and aren't hit that's all that matters expect people may have to take evasive action to stop any collisions.

I think on narrower roads it may work but until people are actually confident in how well they drive and don't think their micra is the size of a HGV it could cause more harm than good but hey things need to change at some point so why not now?

So in an accident you could not say that the person who hit you had crossed the centre line into your lane.

No. No. And thrice no.

There's no white lines anywhere except the main road through our village. Old people now just take the middle of the road, and drive straight at you. Frickin' nightmare.

Most idiotic idea I've ever heard.

Most people I see on the roads struggle to stay within the white lines as it is, I dread to think what they're like without lines as a guide!!

Ah well, sounds like a fantastic time to invest in an insurance company, as I can only see insurance premiums going up if this logic is applied across the country!

If anyone watched the traffic cops program in BBC 3 last week (I think) they used the white line road markings on a rural road to prove that the female driver of a car which had rolled claiming she swerved to avoid a car on the wrong side of the road was infact lying because she was 1.5 meters over the white line on to the other side of the road.

Without those markings what could they really prove?

Wider roads could then become 3 lanes instead of 2 and you could overtake without crossing a line.
Motorways could become 4 lanes (although if you have a bike they are already 5 lanes)
Lines in the road are there to assist drivers as they all mean something.
Next they might phase out road signs. Does anybody need them anymore, most people seem to use satnav.

Yeh, lets remove Give Way and Stop signs so that everyone becomes more cautious and drives slower - that would work

We should get rid of traffic lights too.

Every fu**ker in Leeds seems to ignore them so why not.

Same in Preston! I'll be waiting in peak hour traffic at a junction with the lights on red, and watch the crossroad's lights turn to red, then I start counting the number of cars that blast through :headbang:

Such a stupid idea. The white lines on the road aren't just a guide, they are an almost subconscious warning system... For example they are shorter and closer together as you approach junctions and black spots. As said, lane discipline is s**t anyway, doing this will encourage the idiots on the roads to drive where they like

Absolutely crackers! If this happens, I'll be driving with my headlamps on full beam at all times and I might also add another set too.

I think it's perfectly legal to drive on the other side of the central markings any way. They are there as guidance.

(Might get shot down on that in moment we will see)

I think its so the Google car can not work on those roads!

Dash cam anyone? Gonna be loads of disputes about road placing.

This appeared down the road from me last year

The contractor who was working for the County Council was in a hurry

You can cross the lines and drive on the other side but if you hit someone while doing it you are more than likely to blame.
There are obviously cases where you have the right of way on the wrong side of the road like going uphill if your side of the road is blocked.
