Rising prices - Is it me

Having left my Z parked in the local Co-op car park. I discovered a small ding on the top of of the driver’s side rear wing. No problem, quick visit to one of the local smart repair guys. So far I have tried two. One isn isn’t interested. Not worth his while to come out for one small repair. The second sent me a quote. Maybe I’m out of touch but £223.00 for pushing out a tiny ding seems a bit excessive. See attached photo for the damage.IMG_0418.jpeg

I'm out of touch with prices for things like that.

But it looks like the dent is on the swage line so it will be much harder to push out than if it was in a flat panel, so maybe the quote reflects that.

Good luck getting it sorted.

And I hope whoever was responsible gets what they deserve.

I had a few small dings on a previous car Ian. I nearly fell off the proverbial chair when the quote was north of £500

I know everything’s got expensive but some things more so

Happily some things haven’t- I spoke to the wheel guys we use and they are still reassuringly cheap :D

That’s way too much IRD, shop around a bit more. I know from first hand experience how good these dent men can be but that’s ridiculous. You may get a cheaper quote if you took your car to them.

When a bumper for a tatty old 3 series estate is £1,756.00 fitted, I would say £223 is cheap if they can get that out of the swage line without any noticeable mark.

Not to say it is cheap, just cheap for 2024. We went out to an Italian for dinner the other week. Five people; four pizzas and a serving of pasta.....bill came to £195. For a few pizzas and some boiled wheat! :o

And please be more careful with our car Ian! :poke: :D

That is excessive, back in the day when I was in the UK and in the trade that would have cost me about £20 to get fixed by a dent man. Ok so now we are 16 years further on and I am not in the trade but even so to me over £200 is extremely excessive! Bring it here to Malaga and I know a decent body shop that will fix that (be it new paint but good as new) for less than 100€!

FWIW just last week had my mates car repaired by a dent man here larger dent then that on the side of the bonnet on a Jeep Wrangler and he charged 120€ I found him expensive too but he's the only one here that can do it, no competition and if you want it done without painting you don't have much choice. Shop around I say.

Thank you for the observations guys. I was expecting to pay about £120 but not £223.
Stuart I will have a word with the our wheel guys and also my local ChipsAway agency in Lincoln when he returns from holiday. He has his own dent removal contact. Hopefully I can find someone who will do the job for a fair price.
Part of my trouble is I haven’t moved with the times and sometimes get a shock when I see today’s prices. It’s an age thing.🙃
Andy, pizza prices are ridiculous for what you get and often they are no better than what you can buy from the supermarket. I don’t mind paying a fair price for anything but I hate to be fleeced.🤨

The last dent I had removed took 5 minute, if that. Hence the £20 seemed fair. £200+ for a 10 minute job is madness.

There is limited access to the back of that area. It'll never pop out and be invisible because of where it is. I just had a similar one repaired - £660 inc Vat but i had quotes of over £1100. I wasn't prepared to risk going the chipsaway route (well it wasn't me paying for it :-) )

Ive just had a ding took out today on my N/S rear wing just above the wheel arch.. The lance on my Power Wash flew off and hit it.. Its cost me £85 and hes done a brill job.. if you need a PDR in the Sheffield Area try Wayne at Allots Dent Service https://allottsdentservices.co.uk/ 07944299270

That is the sort of price I had hoped to pay. Thank you for the info. I’ll keep looking. Sheffield would be a bit of a travel for me though.👍

I went to Dent clinic in Gloucester yesterday. It took an hour but without removing any panels other than the side repeater. The cost for seven dents in the wing and door was £220. He says it’s a price for a job irrespective of how long it takes. So much better than repainting. Well worth a visit

That's a £60/90 job for my local dent guy. That's mostly the 'call out' charge as he's mobile. Probs £20 or so if he was already doing a car in the same area/company car park.

Northamptonshire.

A lot of the PDR companies around here don't take on jobs unless it's an easy dent to remove. They don't want to do the tricky time consuming dents.

When they now charge per dent rather than time the bills now charged are excessive.

Well perhaps you could meet half way.. send him a Whatsapp with a pic and he will give you a price.. he really is a really nice bloke .. we were talking ages about car related stuff.. he told me that there are 6 others in this area and they all charge about the same price..also he said I was lucky it being a z4 as the rear wing is single skinned so its easy to access, although I did take a wheel off and the inner liner to give him more access although he said it wasnt strictly necessary

Bloody ell Ian, not having much luck are you, hope you manage to get it sorted without having to lose the shirt on your back in the process
