RIP Nelson Mandela

Got to agree with marchantsuk, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, who gets to make the definition?

Correct, but I do wish the papers/media etc would give the full story when they remember him. I don't mean to take away from all the good he did for one second, and it's through the change in him that he brought the change in the world, he extended the hand of peace and friendship to his enemies and showed great humility in doing so, but the times before these are still part of him and what made his subsequent actions so powerful. Yes he made mistakes, yes he probably regrets some of the things he and the MK did and yes all the good he did and his acts and actions since those days possibly "make up for" the bad (if such a thing is possible), but the MK campaigns, arms proliferation under his premier and early part of his life still occurred, and if as many suggest they were warranted or subsequently proved to be righteous why whitewash over them as if they don't exist. Saints and perfection don't exist, so let's not pretend they do.

And in other news.....

"Nelson Mandela did a lot of good work, don't get me wrong. But I think I'm on track to do something even bigger. I liberate minds with my music. That's more important than liberating a few people from apartheid or whatever." - Kanye West.

:o :o :o If that's a correct quote what a utter :wkr: he is

Just had a google... Looks to be a 'fake interview'. Bizarre.

Yep - article here, but quite a few references to this radio interview yesterday. Seems like a bit of an attempt at irony by him..... Misses the spot somewhat.

I remember him as the Leader of the militant section of the ANC , a terrorist or have we forgotten. ?

A terrorist for sure to start of with. If no one listens to you, how are you going to get them to sit up and take notice while your people suffer?

But what an incredible shot at redemption in the eyes of.......the world. When he came out of prison it could have gone either way. A lesser (normal?) man would have used his 27 years of bitterness to garner the support of the dispossessed to create a bloody civil war which would have rippled through the whole of Sub Saharan Africa and ripped the region to pieces. By his forward looking vision he doubtless saved hundreds of thousands, if not many millions of lives. He was a man of great leadership qualities and could easily have destroyed the region.

Don't forget that this was the era of the Cold War and the biggest victim of our belligerent East/West relations was the ordinary black African who we were happy to keep oppressed and butchered by financing their corrupt leaders when it suited us, as long as their Marxist leanings were kept in check. What would you have done if you were in Nelson Mandelas shoes?

A terrorist he may well have been but the difference is he learned that wasn't the way and he changed the world because of that.

And that's what marks him out as a great man.

Well said Geezah

Gerry adams and Co have a lot to learn from NM.
Its all about forgiveness, forgetting the past and moving forward together.
At times it seems like the UK is doing the complete opposite and hell bent on turning the clocks back

I think that Nelson Mandela might have learned something from history and the fate of the North American Indian at the hands of the white settlers on that continent. You really can't blame the ANC one bit: its supporters were operating as a resistance force in THEiR OWN occupied country.

You've summed it all up the way that I see it.

Indiscriminate bombing of civilians is OK if you say sorry later ? What if Himmler and Heydrich had gone to jail and come out as politicians....?

He did some good things later and his opposition back then weren't much more than government approved terrorists in uniforms. It still doesn't make it right ....

I understand that Himmler's chum, Herr Hitler, spent some time (just 9 months) in jail for Treason, developed a huge chip on his shoulders and then came out as a politician. As they say, the rest is history...

Mandela spent 27 years in jail and then came out and created peace in his region. As they say, the rest is history...

Spot the difference?

well put.

As for the Kanye West interview, I'm surprised anybody is gullible enough to believe it is a real interview.

Have you actually seen the reporting on the Kanye West interview? It is claimed that this was a real interview by a number of news outlets, has gone viral, so I am not surprised it is seen as believable. Also, give Kanye West's inflated sense of self, I am not really surprised.

I guess all viral stories are truth.

Secondly, read this: http://dailycurrant.com/about/

You may be missing my point.

Of course I've read that, if you check I linked the Daily Currant in my original post. However, if you also check Google, there are a number of respected organisations, not spoof sites, that are reporting this as fact. So it is not really surprising that people believe this story.
