RIP mirror glass

So I popped out to the car today to get my fuel book (long story, might do another post about that...), closed the door, the mirror glass promptly made for the floor and is now in multiple bits....
Question is - do I need a new glass and heating element (part# 51167112584) or can I get a new glass and stick onto the existing backing?
Has anyone had this happen before and what did they do?

Thanks :)

Haven’t done it before but I would have thought you would be able to stick a glass to the heated back

New mirror glass from ebay and then stick on with double sided tape - don't; DON'T; DON'T pull the rubber membrane off the heating pad just clean it with surgical spirit (substitute any other spirit based solvent) before you stick the new glass on.

Thankfully I managed to grab mine before it fell off.... Noticed it was vibrating a lot when driving. Knew about this issue so went to gently pull it off... no effort whatsoever!!!

Ended up using silicone to stick it back on.

Just replaced passenger side ,also did the drivers side on my last Z,just bought glass ,cleaned then up and stuck on,all good afterwards.

This happened to me last week! Happened just as i pulled off - luckily it didn't hit the car. Seems like a very common occurrence with the zeds (there's an old, rather long thread about it). As others have said, make sure not to remove the flimsy, fragile plastic backing as that's the heating element. Just buy replacement glass and stick it straight onto the backing after wiping down both with some isopropyl alcohol or similar. These are the ones i bought: passenger, driver. They came with a foam tape but i used a water & heat resistant superglue instead. It was my passenger side that fell off but i replaced them both. Driver's side was stuck on with a single blob of glue. Still felt secure enough but It's best to just replace it now to avoid the same thing happening in the future.

Thanks all! Was getting worried I needed a genuine bmw one at almost 100 quid (gulp). Bought a heated one on eBay for 12 quid - that’ll tide me over while I whip this one off and stick a new glass to it.

The fuel book...yeah, there’s lots of data, graphs too...I’ll do another post about it. Interesting for data geeks ;-)

Just to give an update on this, the glass has just come off again on both sides
Guessing the recent hot weather didn't help but i used heat & water resistant superglue so a bit disappointing.

Will be buying replacements that come with the rear bracket instead of just the glass. Glad it's happened now though because I'm setting off on a 2-week roadtrip in a few days!

Replaced mine last week as it took a holiday from my car.
Bought one from the bay of e for a fiver and stuck it on with gorilla glue

As above you can just glue the glass back in. Mine was looking a bit wobbly a few years back and I just pulled it off and glued it back on with some cheap general glue from B & M. :)

My offside mirror more or less came off in my hand whilst washing the car in June of last year (2019). Having read about this problem previously on the Forum, I prized (I use the word loosely as it took no effort at all) the n/s mirror off as well, and after cleaning all surfaces with isoprop and roughening them up with sandpaper, I reattached the lenses with Araldite two part adhesive.
So far so good, but at the time didn't take into account the possibility that my mirrors were heated. I still don't know whether they are or not to be honest, but the reflectors are still solidly in place so that's the main thing I think.

On reflection, maybe that should have read as roughening up with sandpaper and then cleaning with isoprop........
