I cant work out why on earth anyone would want to drive a land rover unless they had to , even then there are better things out there ,, they are grim unreliable thirsty and leaky rust boxes that dont drive well and are so uncomfortable they are beyond belief ,, I spend a lot of time welding them as I work for three independent land rover specialists doing welding work / restoration work . Still each to their own I guess but the horror stories I could tell and the sights I see.
The Williams that come with owning one are beyond compare .. I say Williams as they are too big to be bills.

Honestly , get a drive in one , and your notion will vanish ,,, I worked on a series 2 re chassis rebuild for a woman of about 40 , she wanted it to tow a horse box.... new chassis a factory fresh bulkhead and all the right bits it was totally immaculate and then some ... the paint was 8k alone , the seats were leather not plastic it was totally as good as it could ever be, she got out of a 540 touring and drove the lr about 200 yards , to the end of the farm lane before turning onto the main road , and then she walked back 200 yards in tears , at that point I left as I had done my part. long story short , she expected it to be like her 540 and it wasnt.
I know of another where the new owner made up a full under body floor pan out of alloy and glued on pampers nappies to soak up the oil leaks to stop it ruining his block drive way ... he had a lexus 4wd before and his drive was immaculate , I could go on ... buyer beware.

Well, to be honest, you should know a LR is never going to be a 540 - thats either complete naivety of stupidity and I take my judgement on that, if you want it to be like a BMW get a Velar or evoque

I am aware of the pit falls just want one but will end up with something more sensible I am sure

Back to the original issue , I would have thought someone would be making these in carbon fibre by now , in twill weave they would suit most colours and be a quick fit , maybe there isnt the demand for them and thats the reason , Im in the '' they look great '' school of thought , but in fantastic plastic even better ,,, they could do dash inserts and those little tail lip spoilers too ,,, perfect.

That will be me when I get my hands on a set for a reasonable price

the girl in question just liked the cute old world look of things , believed what she had been told that land rovers were best and decided she wanted one , it never dawned on her that old things just dont drive like new things. As I said , I only weld them.

Ive never seen the inside of a sill or the car mounting points , but some companies make carbon parts for bikes and they are all sorts of shapes , maybe there just isnt enough customers out there ,, but BMW must have the dies for the injection moulder so a production run on them wouldnt be impossible if there was enough demand.

Then she was very trusting as thats just not going to happen - they will be poor to drive and absolutely nowhere near a car from the 80s never mind a 540 BM

Best is such a relative term ,, Ive no idea what happened to the car in the end , but Im guessing it will be standing in a barn with a dust sheet over it doing what land rovers do best , leaking oil and rusting.
If you stand beside a land rover on a really damp still night and listen closely you can nearly hear them rusting..
