Rick Hunter's Impressions Part 1

So I got a chance to see and sit in the 2009 BMW Z4 Roadster today. The dealership had both sDrive 30i and 35i variants available for viewing. Since I had limited time today, though, I wasn't able to do a thorough thrashing. Thus the "part 1" bit in the title. :)

Overall, I am definitely warming up to this car. However, it is nowhere near my shortlist of cars that could replace my beloved M. Overall, the formula just isn't there. Looking at the individual components, though, I appreciate what BMW is trying to do with the Z4's future.

Front End: Definitely looks nicer in person than in the pictures. The massive grilles and thongline (i.e. the ridges on the hood) don't seem so annoying when viewed in person. I really like the headlights and proper angel eye treatment. I prefer the darkened grills of the 30i vs. the 35i and am disappointed BMW didn't have the darker more aggressive looking grilles in their more powerful trim.

Engine Bay: Big bonnet allows for a very open view into the engine bay. It's a tighter layout inside compared to the E85 and I like that. However I dunno if this car can accept a STB since the airbox sits up quite high. Also I noticed that the engine sits too far forward of the towers (what were they thinking???), a la Audi style.

Side Profile: Character lines are subdued... conservatism works well in this case, but it is just that... too conservative. Wheel gap is just atrocious (~3.75 finger gap). I hope it's just the dealer forgetting to remove the shipping blocks, but highly doubtful.

Rear End and Boot: Again, the view is nicer than in pictures. Boot space is laughable with the hood down. I noticed that there is no way to access the trunk via key? The handle on the E86 had a key slot, but not in the new one.

Interior: LOVE the leather(ette) treatment of the dash. Gives it the upscale feel. Steering wheel is comfortable although not as thick as in the M. Plastic headliner is cheap, but at least it's blacked out. Shook my head at the naff E-brake. Interior storage is minimal. Seats have ZERO thigh bolstering and no thigh adjustment.

I think that's all I could remember for now. Again, overall this is a good package, but nowhere good enough for the price being asked for it.

Saw the cars with Rick Hunter today. I pretty much agree with all his impressions. The E89 didn't look bad in person, but it still doesn't change the fact that it could've had the potentials to look better with body-color windshield frames, hood/front quarter fender seams like on the E85, and without the thong lines and hideous wheels and those cheesy silver front bumper air ducts.

The car is going to look very nice in the streets, in motion. However, you know those cars that you're almost scared to try out because you know you might like the driving dynamics too much and it'll end up being one helluva expensive test-drive? The E89 isn't one of those cars.

Agree with some of the above after a second look at the car i saw in my previous post this time the top was down

The dash finish is as said above very nice more prestige

The interior as a whole i do not like especially the empty space behind the seats not got that cockpit sportscar feel and the Auto gearshift is terrible looks like a playstation joystick.

The headlights as said are very nice but not overkeen on the bonnet and do not like the duct inserts.

The wing mirrors look wrong and not keen on the door handles or the suage line.

The car as i said before is better in the flesh a lot better but at the end of the day with the boot space lost with the top down this car is not a practical drop top and would be no good at all for trips abroad

Interesting thoughts there, thanks for sharing.

GAZA62. You raised an interesting point about it being useless for trips abroad (presuming you do like to drop the top). I completely agree, but if you assume there are a lot of people who like to own fairly new cars, what is now the competition in that market? The SLK is equally useless with the top down... boxster is useless even before the top down.... what else is there in the market? If there isn't, then I guess that leaves a bit of a "gap in the market", as they say.

Very true about the market as folding metal roofs seems to be the norm now.

Most people living around my area seem to leave the top up most of the time think they just like the idea of saying i have the convertible model while at the school or golf club and when it comes to a holiday its a cab to the nearest airport and fly off to an all inclusive luxuary resort not like us who like to take the car on long runs either over here or abroad.

Interesting thoughts guys- Boot space is ridiculous. I like my top down driving. Been to france couple of weeks ago with mrs in my MR. U know women and their stuff. No problems. Fitted everything in the car. That was really disapoointing in the new car. It feels too comfortable, more prestige than a proper sports rag top. I'vedriven it yet. I dont know whether its going to be absorbing or just precise and do what its supposed to do like a porsche. I dont like the boxster due to that. I need to fight the car, throw it around. I love my M.

I thought the boxster was fairly practical myself, the roof takes up no additional cargo space and the front boot is pretty deep. Your limited by the shape of the luggage you carry but its got 150 litres front and 130 litres rear boot space which isn't bad :)

Guys consider buying the cars for your wife, knowing they won't be able to buy much when they go shopping! (Just kidding, no hate PM's here!) Pretty sad the trunk is sacrificed when the 'hard top' is down. It looks pretty but is has to be more than that to win over this gal's heart. Still loving my 00 Z3!

The 23i and 30i engine look identical as the current N52 engine in E85 (with silver cover). I have just checked, BMW uses the old engine in the new Z4.

Thanks Rick, good write up.

I haven't seen one in person but watched Motor ??? the other night and spent 15 minutes telling and showing the E89.
Pretty good show.

Walked in the movie theater today and there was the Z4 commercial with the car being driven in paint.
