RFT indicator

Hi guys,

Wasn't sure if this should go in the newbie forum, but here goes..

Driving to work this morning and my RFT indicator comes on. I slowed to no more than 50mph for the rest of the journey, so should be ok for now.

The manual is a bit vague though - does this mean I have a puncture, or just that there's been a loss of pressure (e.g. could it be a faulty valve or something)? Is it possible this is a one-off fault?

And I assume the only way to see what tyre is affected is to go and check the pressures, i.e. unless there's a giant nail protruding somewhere, there won't be any visual clues as to which tyre is having problems?

FInally, assuming i pump the tyres up and reset the RFT indicator (i assume i have to do the latter) would i expect the warning light to come back on if the problem remains?

Oh and being lazy, what should my tyre pressures be? I've got 18" 108s on run flats. Can i find this info anywhere for future ref?

Thanks all

Mike

The tyre pressures are on the drivers side B pillar that you can see when you open the door. Its by the striking plate.
What car and size tyres do you have?

Could be 2.1 - 2.3 bar front, 2.4 - 2.6 rear.

I've got a 2007 z4 2.5i sport with 18" 108 alloys. Given that the wheels are stock, I assume the tyre pressure info will relate to these tyres specifically? Is there anything else I need to know and/or what might affect pressures (e.g. i've read something about offsets though no idea what this means).

The correct pressure depends on the tyre size, not the wheel size. Look on the tryre wall, it will say something like 235/35/18. The sticker will show what tyre pressure is correct for several tyre sizes.

Re: the 'puncture' if it's not completely flat just pump up the tyre and then hold the button down to clear the error.

Thanks for the help guys. checked the air pressure and all 4 tyres were a little low, with one of them slightly lower than the others. nothing more than 25 less than recommended pressures though tho so I don't think I've got a puncture which is a relief.

Reset rft indicator and drove home on the a3 in ridiculous traffic. 3 hours later and no problems, apart from the fact that I seem to have lost my friday night!

The RFT indicator compares wheel speeds.
If it detects a wheel speed out of spec with others assumption being made that the rolling diameter has changed due to deflation. It can spuriously operate on mixes road surfaces I have had it happen on cobbles for example. That's my understanding any way. Probably a spurious based on slightly low tyre pressures
Welcome
