Rewaxing opinions - should i use a different wax?

Hey,

I generally keep the car waxed with collinite 476, re-doing it every few months - mostly because it seems to last longest, keeps water beading longest etc. Looks good too - but the protection is top priority, especially as I sometimes don't find time to wash it for a bit longer than I'd like.

Anyhow, summer time, longer evenings etc, easier to find time to wash once a week, and it lasts longer - which helps motivate me! Thinking it would be nice to get it a bit shinier after a wash. I usually just rinse, wash and then dry using a bit of quick detailer. I reckon re-waxing after a wash should help get it a bit shinier from what I've seen on here. But when it's already got a coat or two of 476 on from a few weeks back (when I gave it a deeper clean, polish, etc), is there any benefit to getting a 'shinier' wax for a top coat? Or is there little difference? As I say, when i opted for 476, protection was top priority - I've seen a few suggestions that collinite 845 looks 'wetter' - and hd wax seems to look shinier on a friends car (could just be the paint though). Any thoughts on this? Should I stick to extra coats of 476? Or would you try another wax on top? Or something else entirely?

Adding more coats of wax will only add extra protection to it, it wont add any extra depth of shine to your car after 2/3 coats.

Using a different wax over the top of your Collinite may make a slightly different apperance to your car, but another brand of wax wont bond properly to another wax so its durability will be less than if it was applied to a freshly polished/glazed surface.

Your best bet for extra shine or "wet" look would be to machine polish the car, as this will remove most of if not all the swirls and create a perfect blemish free base, thats where the shine and wet look really come from, not from waxs/sealants.

If you cant/dont want your car machine polished, there are very good polish's available for use by hand which will remove swirls - gtechniq P1 for example.

You could de-tar and clay block your car to remove bonded contaminents, then hand polish with gtechniq P1, then glaze the car with something like Prima Amigo or Dodo Juice Lime Prime then wax it with a soft wax like Dodo Juice Purple Haze.

Something along those lines will give you the best shine and wet look without spending a fortune or having you car machined.

Lots of options, I like to vary the wax I use. I'm on Poorboy's Natty Paste at the mo, does a good job. Why not try something different?
 
After a good wash (snowfoam, two buckets etc) and claying once a month, I use poorboys black hole, then Dodo Juice Purple Haze - gets a great, deep shine, and mines a red car :thumbsup:

When you guys change waxes, what do you use to strip off the old wax? Any special precautions necessary?

for me, it's clay and a gentle polish with a DA
