The other day I was down town and about to park, I was standing completely still and suddenly the revs started going up to about 1500 rpm and then down agian, it did this a couple of times till I turned off the ignition... Has anyone else experienced this or knows what the problem might be? :(

Thank you for all replies :D

I've had this problem, and then my check engine light came up. It appeared to be this problem:

I've had it twice in the two years. Like any computer, there might be a software error out of nowhere sometimes.

mine has done tat but it alsogoes the other way and wants to stall. happens occasionally but no one can work out wat is wrng

I started having these symptoms today with my 2003. The check engine light is not on, but it revs up and down and up and down... I was able to get home from work for lunch. But now when I crank the car it's able to stay on for a while, then the rpm's drop and it shuts off. Not sure if I will be able to make it back to work without calling a friend.

According to my Chilton manual an erratic idle could be (it goes from not so bad to OMFG):
Air filter element clogged
Idle air control system fault (all kinds of components in that) perhaps MAF?
Worn, faulty, or incorrectly gapped spark plugs
Vacuum leak at throttle body, intake manifold or hoses
uneven or low cylinder compressions
timing chain incorrectly installed or tensioned
camshaft lobes worn
faulty fuel injectors

Now, eng stalls has a few different items in it, but the common one betweent the two is a vacuum leak. I'm thinking you may just have a clogged air filter. When was the last time you changed/cleaned it?

Note: I'm also an optimist and doubt it's one of the last 4 problems in that list. I would think that if you had a problem with those your car would be doing a lot more than just idling erratically.

my car seems to rev on its own every so often, but it only fluctuates between 700 and 900 rpm. it feels like something is bubbling in the engine. it only does it once in a blue moon.. but whenever it does that.. it catches my attention, for sure.
