Returning M Owner... Maybe - Do you know this Car?

Hi All

Kind of an introduction as I've been away quite some time. I've owned a 3.0i and Z4Mr in the past and was quite active for a short time. We replaced it with a Land Rover of all cars and then a 981 Boxster S - both long gone and been replaced with a couple of lightweight options.

Long boring story short... I miss the M, It's the only car I've ever owned that I really regret selling. I'm considering another, but it has to be the original Colour - Monaco Blue (so pretty hard to come by). I'm wondering if this is a bad idea, better leaving the fond memories of the car and Z4 Forum meets alone and not spoiling... but for now I am going to do some ground work.

A car is currently available, a long way away. I am considering going to view but wondered if anyone knows the car. It's for sale in Cheshire, Joseph Shaw has it. Monaco Blue with Sepang Bronze interior (not sure about that). Advert claims immaculate, but it's up for £16k. I was wondering if anyone knew it - I believe the Reg is BN56 GEY. It's at the bodyshop being machine polished and having the wheels refurbished so no photos and I have to question how "immaculate" it therefore is?

Any info good or bad appreciated.

Cheers

Tom

dont limit yourself to a colour for nostalgia , thats pointless... look further afield, personally id be looking at Stus 2009 car with 40k miles, he's about to sell and from what I'm seeing, he may take a cheeky offer as he's fallen for a M4

Thanks - not really nostalgia. Same reason I bought that colour last time, spent a long time looking. It's the only colour I like, other than maybe the Imola Red.

Do you have a link to the car/ad details. I can't seem to locate.

Monaco blue with light sepang will look great - but so do a lot of the other colour combos - so don't tie yourself down with one colour as the dealer might sense this and refuse to negotiate. Try to go in with a list of other cars you're (seriously) planning on looking at have a look through the service history & any documentation.

Don't fall for the 'full service history will be coming in the next few weeks'

If it's at the bodyshop being polished & having the wheels repainted then it's not immaculate, and expect it to come back covered in holograms, swirls, etc. as I've yet to see a bodyshop who know how to polish a car properly (BMW or independent). Depending on the quality of the wheel refurb, you may see bubbling in as little as a year.

Factor £200-£400 (depending on how much damage they've done) into the price to get the paint corrected properly.

PS, if that service history is correct on the AT advert, then there's something missing between 10k and 39k - and then two at 58k - so you need to check the receipts/invoices carefully for evidence of the dates & type of service done (some could just be brake fluid).

Glad to see you've confirmed my thoughts about selling for another sporty roadster...

One thing, sorry to go slightly off your topic - Monaco Blue? I thought there were only two blues; Interlagos and Midnight?

Thanks guys. I'll be able to handle the dealer - done it a few times :)

That's why I want Monaco - I've attached the day we collected my original one. Allegedly only 7 roadsters were made in Monaco Blue - although I am not convinced, must have looked at all of them one time or another.. I think it's stunning. And I agree that it may work with the light interior

I am looking for an engaging manual daily driver again (currently drive a Golf R and a pretty rapid Audi - but both are like playstations), we've got a couple of Lotus and I race a Caterham so I want something in the middle to replace the R and to drop the roof when the sun is out.

Monaco Blue was the colour I was looking for, but ended up with Ruby Black as I couldn't find a coupe for sale in that colour at the time.

Didn't the 981 S tick all the boxes...how do the two cars compare?

At the time it did, PDK and every other toy Porsche would throw at it. Planned on using it on track but could not insure for business use and track so went out and bought an Elise... big mistake. Nothing in the world compares to that car and got us into a lot of track driving. When we bought it the dual clutch auto, fancy this/that was great fun and novel and it was fast... but now I have turned into "one of those people" that thinks a 120bhp Caterham would be more fun on track than a P1.

We ended up using the Porsche for the odd holiday (leased a mini to commute in as started working miles away) and the 981 was not being used... was just depreciating so we sold it. Looking at the 718, this was probably a bad call. I always make the wrong call when it comes to cars to keep/sell (I believe I have a thread on here about 5 years ago in the same vein - nothing's changed). Turned down a factory build slot for a GT4 in November - genius!

I just fancy a manual car with a locking diff, not to many toys and a soft top - Z4M hits the mark. Seem to be holding their value too which is good. Although if I buy one no doubt that will change - sorry other owners!

If it's the one I'm thinking of, avoid. Monaco blue, extended sapang and aluminium dash? It was for sale last year for a long time at a dealer up north for £13k. It disappeared for a while then appeared at an independent dealer 5 mins away from me.

The sales guy mentioned it had just come in and it wasn't for sale yet as they wanted to check the car out to make sure it was up for scratch. He was going to give me a call if it was going on their forecourt. Sure enough, an identical spec car showed up at Joesph Shaw the next week. These are rare cars and especially in that colour, so I can only assume it's a dog as it's been at three different dealers in less than a year.

Probably not what you wanted to hear but I hope you find it useful.

Thanks - TBH would rather hear that than nothing. I've seen a lot of these cars being spanked on track - going to be an effort finding one that's in good nick I guess. People that have them I suspect will be hanging onto them.

There is a similar spec one documented on Piston Heads:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1051412

Colour combo looks ok. Can't picture the Aluminum dash though - does that replace the nice carbon effect material/leather?

I did consider this one, but seems a high price considering the running in service appears to be missing:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/bmw/z4m-roadster/bmw-z4-m-roadster--------------2007/5492777?v=b

Emailed the dealer about it but got no response. Does anyone know that car?

Ha, I definitely hear you on the Porsche being so good it's almost too good for it's own good. There's something quite appealing about the ZM actually being quite poor at a lot of things that makes you want to drive it and reach it's easy to access limits...

If petrol hits £1.20 again then prices will come crashing down again across the 'attainable' performance car market...

Yea, really hard to explain without coming across as a bit of a twat. The 981 was a truly epic car. But every time I drove it I just wished I was in the Elise. I think it were still used for commuting and general stuff then you'd appreciate it's "VW" mode as we called it... you'd never think you were in a performance car when everything was turned off.
