Return of tramlining

So after I got rid of my runflats in the summer I was amazed at the diffrence especially the tramlining disappearing. For some reason though the last few weeks it's returned with a vengeance. Driving on all the same roads so that variable is taken out. The only thing I can think is tyre manufactures purposely make the tyres softer for the first 3rd so you think there amazing and then the rubber is harder after that so you think they last longer. Could this harder rubber cause this return or is there a deeper issue.

Hi,
It's more likely to be because of lower ambient temperature, nearly all summer tyre's performance drops off below 10 deg C as the compound becomes less compliant and grippy.
Factor in the sensitive nature of the Z’s chassis to tyres/pressures it doesn't take a lot to upset try the balance.

this... i noticed a little more this week on some spirited runs

Yeah that makes sense good point. So what your saying is drive faster so the tyres are warmer

That will do it..........
I don't fancy you're chances of convincing the gendarmerie that it's a valid reason though, but I'm sure someone must have tried it

What tyre pressure are you running?
Have you tried the M tyre pressures?
They have non runflats as standard but run much lower pressures (F 30psi & R 32psi) despite the fact the M cars are actually a good 100kg or so heavier than a 3.0. Changed mine to this a couple of weeks back and it made a huge difference all round. I had been running my non runflats previously at the standard runflat pressures.

36 is pretty high, also depending on when you last inflated it might have changed due to drop in temp.

I run 30 32.

Fiddle with it until you get the setup you like.

Ive never gone above 34psi and i found that too much

I check it weekly and it's always bang on 36. Never known a car to never loose a little air. Il go put 30/32 on now and have a quick blast down the a14.

I've put 30/32 on and had a little drive. Il check it better tomorrow. Waxing and sealing sacha today so don't want to get her all dusty after she's been cleaned haha.

Can someone explain to me what exactly is tramlining? What does it feel like?

Basically the tyres follow linear imperfections in the road surface, typically white lines, tarmac strips, or the ruts you see on the motorway lane 1 - it feels like any or all of the tyres are skipping sideways, sometimes in different directions and can be very alarming, your instinct is to correct the steering which can make it worse. On knackered RFT's mine was almost undrivable on badly rutted roads.

Answer is to ditch RFT's, dont cross double white lines and keep out of the slow lane :P

I usually get it from the ruts that trucks wear Into the roads. It feels like someone is grabbing the wheel and pulling it.

For me when I first got the car and it had well worn Bridgestones on, it felt like the car was momentarily on rails and an exaggerated input on the steering wheel was required to correct

I replaced with new Pirellis/Goodyears (still run flats) and the problem disappeared :D

I'm running 36psi all round. 30 sounds so low!

Whatever you decide to settle on, whether you like the M spec pressures or not going back to 36 all round seems to be a mistake. It isn't what BMW recommends even with runflats. From the handbook the pressures on a 3.0 coupe should be Front 33psi & Rear 39psi.

btw where did you get my quote above about keeping out of the slow lane - I don't remember ever saying that?

I think Rory mi-quoted whilst banging his head about middle lane etc, it was me that said it. I'de actually suggest lane 3 is most appropriate for the Z4 Rory :poke:
