Cost more in postage. Just order one from your local dealer.

Too true, will give them a buzz tomorrow. Will keep everyone posted on how the x3 CiD turns out.

Well peeps, don't bother on trying to fit an x3 screen, it does not fit. Just hope the hole I've cut out of my dash is smaller than the template I've just ordered for the z4 screen. If not, I'm screwed and it will have to be a new dash. [CRYING FACE]

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here that someone did fit the x3 screen successfully? :tumbleweed:
might be worth a seperte post, with an appropriate thread title to grab their attention?

Hats off to you guys for what looks like a fantastic retrofit  . I was lucky enough to get my zed with the satnav already fitted, but as another member pointed out, the interface (gui) is quite a bit dated. I just recently did the 'hidden menu' option and changed the perspective so at least it looks a bit more modern/3d instead of the top-down look.
I am curious how the glossy screen of the tablet works with normal driving - are reflections a problem, or is the tablet screen bright enough that you don't notice any?
Anyway, awesome effort and thanks for sharing in such a detailed thread, including the 'everything you need parts list' in the first post. Cheers.

I know someone fitted an aftermarket x3 screen into a Z but haven't been able to find anyone who has fitted an OEM x3 screen into a Z.

I cut out the dash using a template I made that was a perfect snug fit. I centralised the jig and cut out the hole but I've found that there is something stopping the stepper motor on the far left of the unit to allow the unit to fit bang on in the centre. Also the stepper motor causes the unit to stick out a lot at the front overhanging the dash. Without the stepper motor attached you can easily centralise the unit and it doesn't look too bad but there is a lack of fixing points also.

There is a Z4 with an original X3 screen. It was a few years ago but there is a picture on here also.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that looks very much like a z4 cid, certainly not like the X3 screen I have, or like any of the x3 screens available on eBay?

hmm.. are they really that different?
I could have sworn the mk1 X3 we had as a company car had a screen that looked very similar to that?

No, that is a Z4 one, the X3 sticks out more at the front. I will have another look for it.

So this weekend I finally got around to hooking up the arduino and getting 90% of the functionality I want in!

The arduino will now automatically open the satnav when the car ignition is turned on, automatically close when it's off, the open/close buttons work fully (it fully opens and closes at a touch of the button - no holding the button).
The tilt forward/backward buttons are also done and in, stepping the satnav in either direction one "step" every half a second whilst the button is closed (I went for 0.5 second gap, as it suited me  )

The final bit I want to get it to do is control power to the Tablet - at the moment the Tablet charging circuit is wired directly into ignition live - when the car is on, the tablet charges, and stops charging when the car is off.

What I want to be able to do is when the car is turned off, allow the tablet to charge for a further 15 minutes, before cutting the power.
I also want to detect when the headunit is turned on without the ignition, and if it is, power up the tablet too.

Should be fairly simples, but I ran out of time this weekend

Should anyone be interested, I'll post up the arduino sketch shortly.
(it also fixes a potential issue with the code posted on DanMiddle2's thread, where power is continuously sent to the motor even when not in use, which definitely causes it to get warm, and potentially wears it out quicker...)

You need the Nav loom and DVD drive to get the CID to connect and work. Head unit will need replacing as well.
