Retrofit Satnav screen

Hi SK93,

I'm very interested in what you're doing here. I have plans to sink a nexus 7 into my dash. At the moment I'm thinking about replacing the stereo and heater vents with it but what I've seen here is making me think again
Do you happen to have the dimensions of the screen carrier, I'm wondering if I can cut it to fit the nexus???

PS I'm an electronics engineer and I only live round the corner so if you need help or advice on anything give me a shout

There is nothing underneath really so any tool in a dremel is fine.

I thought I had read a while back that someone nearly cut into the air ducting beneath the dash?

That looks awesome!

Hope I can find someone to do that to mine when my screen dies!

Hi

This is a great post! well done sir.... I am an Apple Man and currently working on the Ipad mini install. I wish I was rich so I didn't have to work! I would spend all day playing with things like this. Dammm time to go to work.

I did try the nexus, but they screen is too wide for the port (as in, the screen extends over the hole cut in the front.
You could probably mod the hole to accommodate, but it wasn't something I was looking at doing.

Thanks! Good to know it kinda fits. Now all I need to do is find a sat nav screen...

It will fit in the box.. and you will need to take out most of the internal mounting and strengthening bits.. but the nexus will go in..
however, I never considered/tested how much space you've got left once it's in for plugging in the usb power...

Where abouts are you, as if you're near, I can always rip mine out, open the case and we can have a gander if it fits.....

I'm in East Leake, I wouldn't want you to rip your car apart but if you have plans to remove it for something then I would be interested in popping round with the nexus and having a look see :D
My plans are to have the tablet removable so if I'm parking somewhere dodgy, like Shepshed , then it wont be in the car to be pinched.

Mate - I'm in Keyworth.. what's that 6 miles? lol
It's pretty simple to remove at present, as I've still not 100% cracked the motorisation ;)
I'm working on the car either tomorrow or saturday morning, so you're welcome to pop over, have a beer and a gander?

In regards to it being nicked - mine wasn't even screwed in and when they took the car, they didn't think twice about taking the oem-looking satnav, even though they did find the iPad hidden under the seat, so I wouldn't be too concerned with that

Plus - if it's in the car and they nick the car, you'll get a nice way of tracking your car down :)

Only 10 mins away then  How come I've never seen you driving round?
I'm out on Saturday, but I can be free tomorrow evening for an hour or two. Send me a PM if you want to meet up.

I don't know.. I used to date a vegetarian in East Leake, and I'm always at the cottage getting my grub on :P

Plus, I must have gone through there, what, 6 times last weekend - back and forth from the airport and to Donny for the races

pm sent!

so.. I've taken a gamble, and invested money with the stealer.

£0.90+vat for the part number 01290301834 - which I and he believe should be the cutting jig their techs use on the retrofit.

It's on it's way from Germany now, so when it arrives, I'll see what can be done about sharing my humongous investment!

Hi,

Do you still have the jig?

I landed an X3 CID and after cutting a hole in the dash it may not end up being a perfect fit, so am now contemplating on getting a used z4 CID to put it right. I'm kind of panicking though that the hole I've cut may be bigger than the one for the z4. If I can get my hands on a jig for the z4 then I could play about with the x3 screen a bit more to try and get it to fit perfect by cutting more dash off, but making sure that I don't cut any more off the the size of the jig.

Any chance you could send it me and I'll sort you postage and return it?

Thanks

Al

Cost more in postage. Just order one from your local dealer.

Too true, will give them a buzz tomorrow. Will keep everyone posted on how the x3 CiD turns out.

Well peeps, don't bother on trying to fit an x3 screen, it does not fit. Just hope the hole I've cut out of my dash is smaller than the template I've just ordered for the z4 screen. If not, I'm screwed and it will have to be a new dash. [CRYING FACE]
