Retrofit Sat Nav a question?

I have just been looking at some old threads, one which I might be interested in is retrofitting Sat Nav, however before I go to far, one quick question

How is the Sat Nav controlled, I get the feeling it is from the Headunit, as I have a non OEM headunit fitted which at this moment in time I do not want to remove is this a non starter?

Why do you not want to remove it and replace it with the navigation head unit? Looks the same, except no display on it as that is obviously on the navigation screen.

I think you misunderstood something here, I currently have an Alpine iDA X305 headunit fitted that I do not want to remove at the moment.

I'd love to fit a sat nav into mine. However, wouldnt have a bloody clue how to do it / to scared.

It's easy enough to do, just have to be very brave when cutting the hole in the dash. My car was only 18 months old when I took the plunge.

When I bought my last BM (325i M Sport) in January 2008 the salesman told me not to bother with the BM fit sat nav as in his view it wasn't very good (there are some 'honest' salesmen about out there...!) From posts on this forum and other BM related forums there appears in some cases to be problems with screens and satellite lock. I use a Garmin in both my Zed and the 'family' car. In the Zed I have hardwired the power utilising current feed from ther cigarette lighter and an ON/OFF switch fitted under the dash. Wiring then passes up underneath the steering wheel and onto the dash mounted unit. Looks neat and unobtrusive with minimal exposed wiring. The Garmin used has prooved extremely reliable and with a bluetooth connection I also use it for hands free mobile connection. Sorry I can't supply photographs as I am working in the UAE at the moment but the whole fit/set up process took less than an hour. Hope this helps.

Have recently decided that even though we have had the car 5 years we are going to keep it for an awful lot longer, nothing else out there really does it for me at the moment the way the Zed did when I first saw it. So I was just looking at different projects for something to do and this tickled my fancy,as far as Sat Nav goes I currently use a Europe wide Garmin Nuvo which has been fantasticly reliable, :driving:

It is not just the satnav info on the screen, TMC, Phone Book, Radio / CD / iPod info, additional board computer functions are just some to mention ...

When I retrofitted it in my previous Z, it felt like a whole new car again.

I agree with PVR, I also have all the bluetooth OEM to retrofit when I get round to it (not a word PVR)

No the OEM nav isnt as good as my TomTom but I dont have to worry about wires, sticking it to the dash, leaving it at home etc.

It would cost you around £500-£600 and you will get that back when you come to sell.

Sorry PVR... did you say:

When I retrofitted it in my previous Z, it felt like I needed a whole new car again.

- boy does that screen come close to the end of the hole in the dash... :D
