Resprayed M's- values and opinions

Just wondering what everyone thinks about this.

I've always loved Sepang bronze but given there are only 9-10 of them in RHD (coupes) it's doubtful I'll ever find one. That and the fact that I know my car is mechanically up together so changing just to 'improve' the colour seems a hell of a gamble in my book.

Question is, what do people think about cars that have had a colour change? Is it something you'd actively avoid even if it was a first rate job (glass out, shuts and inner boot done) and the seller could prove it wasn't a cover up of damage? Or would you consider one if everything was in place and legit? Obviously the colour is a matter of preference so let's try not to turn this into a thread on whether or not you like the colour!

I'm not entirely sure/serious about going down this route as its a lot of money and I'm only mulling it over as a what if, maybe, perhaps kind of thing. The only thing making me even consider this is that I'd like a couple of bits doing and started thinking that perhaps I should think a bit more seriously about a colour change.

Fwiw my car is ruby black and it really is a lovely colour, my second choice in fact, but I hate trying to look after it and I've vowed to never buy another black car! I do feel strangely guilty writing this out though

As they become more collectable, a respray / colour change could have an impact on values. For a non-M model, I won't be worried, but as well as 3-5k to respray properly (engine bay etc), you could loose on resale. It just depends on the future buyer in question - pot luck.

You would be better off buying a scruffy M that needs paint and starting from there, if you can find one!

Or just keep an eye out / place adds for a Sepang model.

FWIW, I love ruby black. It would be my first choice if I had a butler to keep it clean

It's ur car- u do as u wish If money is no object fire ahead. If you are keeping it long term to enjoy the new colour then it's a good idea. If you are only keeping for another year or so may be an extravagance unless money is no object.

I'm also with abar121 on the colour. It's lovely! Get it sealed and protected properly to really make the paint pop!

The paint on mine isn't too bad at all and I tend to keep it pretty clean despite the obvious difficulties with black. I've machine polished it, clayed waxed etc and when it's clean and the sun hits it I do genuinely love the colour. I've actually given it a very quick once over today for its mot and I've got to say I think a colour change would be a step too far despite how nice sepang is on a coupe.

With regards to affecting value, I would never expect to recoup the cost so it would be dead money and given that the car doesn't really need the paint it doesn't make sense on any level. It was more a case of me wanting a couple of bits redone that I would like to see better finished and my mind started wandering. I'd agree though that as they get more collectable, the original finish is probably preferable unless you strip it right back to a shell and start again. Sadly, money is an object for me so an engine out job is unlikely to happen!

A wrap wouldn't be such a bad idea, I just worry about finding a good place that won't score and cut the paint underneath-I've seen some shocking jobs online.

As you can probably tell, I'm not entirely sure what I want :lol: I've always allowed the finish of my cars to effect me more than is normal/healthy but have always been put off full resprays due to cost and the bodyshop lottery that I've never been particularly lucky with. Perhaps I should just think about a touch up in a few years and then a wet sand back to perfection.....maybe!

A colour change would put me off buying personally, as much as I love Sepang I'd stick with the Ruby, another colour I love!
For me I can only really understand a colour change for a track car or something older that has been rebuilt and bare-shell sprayed.

Would only affect the value if it was obvious if the car was viewed to potentially buy

As for the titled topic ? Lunacy springs to mind
Doing it on a £5k car is a different caper to doing it on a £15k car , a wrap would be preferable but even that would hammer the pre changed value
Give yourself a stout flick on the nose beanie , its a crazy notion , keep your car clean + polished & enjoy what you have

all depends Beanie, id recon depending on how long your going to keep it.. and who gets the car after you.. (mine will go to my little son), but if your looking at keeping it mate, id recon go for it. its yours, you do whatever you like to it. Resale value of course will depend on the buyer.. personally i wouldn't give a crap if its a different colour, as long as its been a solid job. yeah man, please be weary of wraps mate, I've personally seen lots of box cutter jobs into the paintwork underneath…

A respray however well done is likely to put people off, until these cars become proper classics and then it becomes more acceptable, but usually if the colour remains original. Having said that a Laguna Seca Blue Z4M would look superb in my opinion.

Thats a good point Dave, I'd been thinking about how classics are often found with several colours on them once they get stripped back and their values weren't hurt by it. As you say though, it's at the point where they are classics and not modern obscurities!

Vanne, tbh it was only a whimsical idea really but you're right enough, these things should be done to please yourself. I can't see myself selling it for a good while but you never know how things will pan out. I've always joked that I intend to keep every car I buy but I don't think I'll ever earn the kind of money where it's feasible to do that!

Another way to look at is is that if the respray would result in keeping the car for much longer, it may well end up costing you less in the long term.

Lets say 5 years, and avoid the depreciation of a newer car. it would easily have paid for itself during that time.

O/T. Beanie, CSL box and tune are ready for install, just trying to find a few cooler (sub 40) deg C days to do the install. Also at the same time have lots of other goodies I've been gathering needing to be installed, so will need to pop off the front bumper and then sort the box. Looking forwards to it, the CSL box (in the end i went with Karbonious) and snorkel look fantastic mate.. cant wait to enjoy the finished product.
