Hi,
Looking for your opinions, I have been quoted £187 + vat to have my front bumber removed, stripped, resprayed and laquered. I am being told this is cheap, but i saw in a thread in here some where that some one was quoted £80 for a bumber respray. any one had any experience in getting this done and what would you say is a reasonable price for this work. :driving:

£187+vat is not a bad price if they remove it too - but most quick fixes cover the rest of the car and spray it in place.

Also it order to get a good colour match they would need to blend it into the surrounding panels - bonnet - side wings and then relacquer the lot - and so not remove it!

Also depends on location - my cheapo local bodyshop which i have used for a few years now for the odd bits charges £150 "cash" per pannel (or pair of skirts)

Sounds reasonable to me.

For an 'off spray and fit', done through the books is in the ballpark.

Find a friendly and a time whne convenient to them take the bumper specifying it's not an insurance job in and I'm sure you'll be able to get it for half that price. Will take you 30 mins in total to remove and refit it

Thanks Guys, Dont feel like i am getting ripped off then. Thanks for advice CJ but i want it done asap and just know i would break or scratch something if i tried to remove it myself, as i am good at that and have a past record to proove it.
I have since spoken to the garage that is doing the job and after a bit of Negotiations they have agreed to touch up some stone chip marks on the wings for free. So £187 doesnt feel so bad anymore.
Thanks again guys
   :driving:

It sounds very cheap if the job is done by BMW approved bodyshop, and reasonable for specialised bodyshop.

To work out if any job you are being quoted is over priced just think of the labour and materials involved.

Remove bumper, strip, repair, prime, base coat, lacquer, bake, put back together, clean and polish, allow a bit for seized bolts etc.

£75/hour labour, paint at say £40.

£80 would be too cheap. Nobody is going near my car who is going to quote that kind of money.

My Boxster needed a front bumper repair, it was about £250 including VAT and it was a fantastic repair, car returned immaculate.

I take the view that it is better to pay a bit too much than too little, if I pay a bit too much, all I've lost is the few quid I've overpaid by. Pay too little and the job will need doing again or cause the car to be devalued.

Thats very good price cheap to be honest but then i live near London so pay more.

My Calibra in avatar had front bumper and wing mirrors resprayed in prep for show season cost £350 a few years ago the bodyshop i used was expensive but the work was very very good no sign of orange peel at all and very good colour match plus the car came back in the condition it went in spotless.

Thanks guys, i just wasnt sure but you all offer sound advice and i take on board about if it's too cheap then prob a crap job, The Garage in Question is a ford approved dealer and the guy who gave me a price i had met briefly and shared a few pints with made during a weekend away with Mrs Nosa, he made the mistake of telling me he was a body shop manager, so of course with me thinking of getting the Bumber resprayed steered the conversation in my "benifit" He told me without looking at the car he would do it for £100+Vat. I nearly ripped his arm off, he told me to pop in and see him, when i did he came with the clip board and calculator, at that point i thought "here we go". 5 minutes later my price had gone from £100 to £185. :poke:
He said i didn't tell him it was a BMW etc etc. (he,s kidding eh talk of garages and cars over a few pints and i don't metion at any point i have Z4....Scratcing head sarcastically):x

I did think at that point it was still a not bad deal and gave him the benifit of doubt as the price quoted was under the influence of falling down juice.

I totally echo the sentiment about doing it right not twice. If we are talking about dealer rates of say £75 per hour then you'd be well into £300+, but the reality is a good quality indy sprayer will do it very quickly. He'll be using £5-£10 per hour labour to prepare it and get the paint for a say £20-£30. Fitted into his spare time it's pocket money. Of course if you go near a pro bodyshop then the hourly rates go through the roof and mention insurance and add 50% to that.

For me the test is to see their work and in my case use the same guy for many jobs on many cars and do all the dismantle and assembly myself.

Here's my '£80' job, after my local guy bettered the 'pro bodyshop work of 2008, when an acreditted bodyshop sprayed it after I needed a new bumper under insurance .

Snapped in the park last week pre wash and wax (the marks being dust):

Goes in tomorrow for the Bumber respray, Have taken some before pics but they arnt very good but should hopefully show the mess, once i get it back will take some after pics and post em up.
Why am i so nervous about this

If they're taking it off make sure you check your Fog lights when you get it back (if you have facelift). The body shop I sent mine to for repair seemed to have trouble getting it right.

Pre facelift, but fear not, the term "fine tooth comb" doesn't come close.

Well all done and Dusted so to speak, really happy with respray, Not a single blemish anyware in the finish, Final cost £193.48. not bad me thinks.

You will notice one of my cats admiring the job as well
