(Resolved) Roof Motor Making Grinding Noise

Weird one, I have an 04 Z4 and the roof has been behaving perfectly since owning it. It had a mild moan when it was frozen but that I took to be the cold.
Tonight it dead struggling to go down and the motor was making a grinding noise. I left it for a bit and then it went down fine with no complaints. Now it didn’t want to go up and was making a nasty noise. Got it up eventually with a bit of help from me. It’s now up and locked but it’s still making a horrible noise when trying to operate it. The roof motor has been relocated so I don’t think it is that I hope…

I live in Bath if anyone knows a place to go - or if I can just go to a regular garage.

Have you checked the fluid level?
If it's relocated and at more of an angle then you need a bit more fluid in it or else it uncovers the inlet ports.
I moved mine last week and it wouldn't operate at all.
Stood it upright and it worked, but the first operation sounded horrendous due to the air it had sucked in.
Topped the oil up and now all is fine.
Of course, if its been moved a while and the level is low, you could have a leak?

I have not checked this… I didn’t know this was a thing.
I’ve had a look and it’s just at an angle so hard to say!

I know what this will be. I had one do the same last week. The motor is slipping and failing to spin the pump.

Simple fix once you can get at the motor but if yours is already in the boot it’s a 15 minute job 👍

You’ve a reply to your PM so give me a call tomorrow
