Hi All,

I think I'm having 2 issues with my brakes. (Possibly related issues).

ISSUE 1:
Every time I touch the brake pedal, theres like an instant single jolt/knock/thud in the movement of the car, and then it continues to brake as normal. Not sure what this single quick heavy thudding noise is or where its coming from. Any ideas?

ISSUE 2:
Handbrake, the first 1 inch of travel is very free and light with little friction, after 1 inch of travel it get very hard very quick all of a sudden, lots of friction, but even when setting the handbrake in the hard portion of travel, the handbrake still doesn't effectively brake, the car and still rolls up/down small inclines and hills. Any ideas?

Hope you guys can help!

Thanks in advance :)

Sounds like either the rear shoes are worn out so need replacing but as you only use them for short periods they maybe mine was abit loose to begin with and theres no bolts to tighten to readjust form inside the car. they could just need rebedding in so put the handbrake up and drive about 100m with it applied that should get them to bind better when stationary. if that doesn't work you may have readjust manually by taking the wheel off. As for the clicking / thudding that could be one of the callipers seizing up due to age go around see if there's any smell or heat coming from them after a drive you can normally smell burning. If there's no smell its could just be low pads and its catching the calliper housing have a good check around make sure no debris is touching also

The bonded Hand break shoe linings have been known to separate from the metalwork.
Have you had any work done on your breaks recently? Something loose, or excessive ware on the pads? The two problems my not be related. Good luck.
Dell.

The thud could be loads of things, I would start with lolly pop bush inspection and pads moving in carrier.

Rear handbrake could be the friction material has come of the shoe or your disc inners where the handbrake runs will be corroded badly only allowing a small contact patch.

Hi all, I'll take it all apart next weekend as I'm away this weekend. I only just bought the Z4 but just had a quick look around and noticed the rear brake discs are completely worn with a massive lip on the edge of the discs. All the pads and front discs look ok. The rear brake discs definitely need changing.

I guess this could be the sole cause of ISSUE 2 (hand brake issue? and possibly cause of ISSUE 1?

Probably.
If the rear discs look old you can pretty much guarantee that they will be corroded on the inside where the handbrake shoes are.

RESOLVED

ISSUE 1:

Lollipop bushes, inside rubbers worn, control arm rear rod was very wobbly inside the lollipop, replaced with Meyle HD bushes both sides for £40 for the pair and knocking noise instantly gone :)

ISSUE 2:
had a look at the rear pads and discs, pads very warn with hardly any meat and discs had the biggest shoulder/lip in the world, changed both pads and discs and hand brake is 90% better, still very free for the first inch then goes instantly hard, but at least it bites and brakes when it goes instantly hard.
