Reset the windows

If your windows aren't behaving correctly try this.

Turn ignition on

Push the open window button until the window is open, then keep it presses for 5 seconds longer.

Push the close window button until it is closed, then release.

This should reset the memory on the window. Same procedure for both windows.

So ... when you press the open window, your window closes? Strange car you have ...

Better fix it and then delete my comment 😉

My driver side window doesn't open and close with the top I wonder if this will solve this problem!

I am afraid to try this as it may turn on my washing machine or reprogram the garage door opener!

that worked for me! thx for the tip!

Hello,

Just adding a post as ive had a fair bit of faff trying to get this to work which i did finally.

My symptoms was passenger side worked fine, top works fine, just driver side manual up didnt work, it would only go manually up in the auto up position. I had a flat batter recently which seems to have caused it.

In the garage, battery tender connected, engine off but ignition on, doors closed.

I tried a few things to no avail:

Auto down, followed by 4 further down pushes in quick succession followed by auto up and hold at the top for over 2 seconds and repeat.

manual down, then auto up and hold for over 2 seconds and repeat

Open hood on the key
close hood with the key in the door
repeat x 2

in mid down position, hold manual up button for a few seconds and repeat in different positions

Eventually what worked for me, having already tried it before was:
Auto-down all the way and hold down for 10 seconds then auto up all the way and hold for 10 seconds, repeat.

Voila, working. I had already done that before with no luck.

Basically keep fiddling until it works.

It can be a bugger, I had to do it on the passenger side to get it to work. Note that the doors and roof have to be closed for this.

I will put in the ones I have had to do, as every time I disconnect the battery I have to go through the various ones.

One method:

Z4 window reset -

Passenger window should be in closed (up) position.
Hold down to open window and wait for 10 seconds once at bottom.
Pull up to close window and wait 10 seconds once at top.
Repeat once more.

Second method:

Initialization is performed on the power window switch of the relevant door.
Requirements for correct initialization:
• Initialization with engine running
• Convertible top, doors and windows closed

Initialization comprises:
• Erasure of initialization
• Reinitialization

An initialization must be performed:
• In the event of malfunctions, e.g. no one-touch control function, no opening or if available no comfort function is possible
• After the power window drive has been replaced
• After work is carried out on the power window mechanism
• After a power supply interruption, e.g. disconnection of the battery or disconnection of the power supply to the door
• After the door window glass has been removed and installed or replaced
• After adjustment work on the door window glass
• After adjustment work on the convertible top
• After replacement of seals

Erasure of initialization:
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate power window switch in "Open" position four times within 10 seconds

This erases initialization of the power window, anti-trapping protection and toll function are inactive.
Check whether one-touch control (toll) function is inactive, otherwise repeat procedure.

Reinitialization:
Avoid a break between the two steps!
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer

Thanks for the support PVR, I’ve tried those I’m afraid, quite a number of times. The second one - it says to avoid a break, but the last step of erasure is the same as the first step of reinitialisation, the window is already open from erasure. Open fully, press 4 times - then says open fully as the next step?

[ref]SteveAuZ4[/ref], when you say reset; do the windows do the little drop and back up when you open the doors?
Is it only the one-touch operation you have lost?
If so, you may find it needs coding again.
I had a similar issue and using Scanner 1.4 I found the one-touch boxes were ticked already. I unticked and saved, then went back in and ticked and saved. Then they started working.

Hey, no the issue is that I don’t have the positive seal thing happening. The glass doesn’t drop, both windows stopped at the same time. They bend against the roof seals and the doors are now hard to close. This all happened around the time I activated the one-touch for the passenger and a few other unrelated things in BMW Scanner 1.4. Sorry, I should have been clearer. I thought the window reset was the solution to this issue I’m having. There is a little “jut” sound upon closing, as if they were about to drop, but they don’t.

OK, so next thing is it could possibly be a fault in the GM5 module?
Unlikely both window regulators have failed at the same time.

When resetting windows does anyone else hear the electrical emitted beep noise when holding in the up and down positions?

I use that as the time needed for holding.

It could be out of the range for certain people's ears to be fair.

Thanks. What’s the next step to get that confirmation? What could have caused it? Me messing with the Scanner 1.4 maybe?

So I looked up GM5 and it appears the module is related to the central locking, not the auto-dropping of the windows? At least I couldn’t find any posts about the GM5 and auto-drop in the same sentence.

“ The GM5 is used to control a variety of different functions. Here is a list of functions this module controls:
By the way, this is also the list of things that won't work when the GM5 module is removed. The car will run and drive just fine except for the items listed below.
Power window control (up and down control of windows)
Remote entry (locking and unlocking via key fob and central locking button)
Trunk release (via key fob, handle button and interior trunk release button)
Vehicle alarm (siren, tilt & sonar sensors and clown nose light)
Windshield wiper and washer (both front and rear if equipped)
Interior lights”
