I'm taking Mrs M to Madrid for a long weekend in May to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Has anyone been before, any suggestions of 'must see's' 'must do's'? Going to see Real Madrid is definitely out, but any recommendations will be much appreciated.

I went to Madrid a couple of years ago on business so didn't do much touristy stuff.

Went out for about half a day and night to have a look round and I'm sorry to say I found it rather dirty, but it's a capital city so that's what happens I suppose!

The plaza mayor (Madrid square) is good, there's always something going on there, loads of cafes etc.

Sorry I can't help with anything else, I wasn't there long enough. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time and don't forget comfy walking shoes!

Happy Anniversary for May!

marchantsuk, are you going to drive, or is 1,200 miles too far ? I know it's a gift for her, but you've been married too, and there are probably some great roads through the Pyrenees ...

Unfortunately I have only been to Madrid once and it was a corporate jolly, so I was a little the worse for wear most of the time... Sorry, no use whatsoever

Been to Madrid many times on business but never do the tourist bit. Frankly of all the cities of Europe it's not one I'd do the tourist bit in.
As posted above lots of nice squares, cafe's and street life but it's a busy capital city

BTW - I love doing tourist things while on business. last week in Milan so up the Duomo cathedral onto the roof, visited the castle, etc.

I love Madrid, its great..but i love spanish food and the architecture is amazing. It blows Milan out off the water...that really is a dump!!
