Replacing Wing Mirror Glass & backing plate

Hi, Unfortunately for me the drive’s side wing mirror glass fell off the other day!! I understand not an uncommon problem on Z4's. I have ordered a new glass and back plate form eBay- £20 (heated, convex and wide-angle) I assume I have heated mirrors, they demist quickly.

Has anyone changed the back plate and mirror. Any advice welcome
 
Have a search on here as I'm sure there is a thread with pic's...

But basically..

To remove simply use the controls in the car to aim the mirror/backing plate down, as if you wanted to view the ground when in the car. As far as it will go.

Then if you look in the gap at the top between the backing plate and the housing you will see a clip with a groove in it.

Very carefully use a small flat headed screw driver and push the clip away from the car, use some masking tape to protect the housing. It will probably be quite stuck in place, but once it move's it will unlock the backing plate. You will then just need to unplug the wire's for the heating element.

Nearly right. but youre pointing the mirror in the wrong direction. you want to be viewing the sky not the floor. the rest is correct though. with the mirror pointing to the sky, flat head screw driver in the centre. blade parallel to the car. there is a locking ring on the back of the mirror. there is a notch in it that you are inserting the screwdriver into. push the screwdriver out to twist the locking ring round and off it comes. might be a bit still if there is a bit of a crud build up.

The clip is at the top, so angle the backing plate down.

Now that is peculiar. Those images are contradictory. 3rd image down which shows the back of the mirror shows the notch into which you insert the screw driver at the bottom. Whereas the other images show it at the top....

Maybe you can go either top or bottom.

Both times I've removed mine I've gone bottom as that is what the TIS said that I have.

Hi, Thanks for the input. Received the mirror yesterday, unbelieveably quick delivery. Unfortunately it had a blue tint and my are clear. So I a/w the replacement. Looks like a job for the weekend. I'll update you on how I get on.
 
unfortunately I could not fit the replacement glas, it has a different backing plate, it'll have to go back again
 
do you not have the orignal backing plate?

When mine fell off it didnt break, i just araldited it back on. can you not glue the new glass onto the old backing.

the glass demists perfectly with it glued on as well.
 
Main dealer is stating that glass is not covered under AUC and therefore failed mirror bonding is also not covered :thumbsdown: .

I think this is ridiculous.

Next stop BMW UK ?, contacts or advice gladly received please.
 
My drivers door one fell off yesterday.......didn't smash, just a slight chip on one edge.
I stuck it back on with 6 blobs of silicon sealant with a view to replacing if it falls off again

When you do Jimbo, be prepared, over £105 even from Sopers.

Hence my questions re AUC.

Only the mirror itself would be required which are £12 a side on Ebay thankfully.
 
I went out to my car the other morning to see that some kind soul had picked up the mirror glass from the road where it had fallen and put it on the soft top. I also went for the Araldite option, and it's stayed fine and still demists. :driving:
 
Hi, I still have not fitted a replacement mirror!! The OEM one from ebay (inc backing Plate) was different form the original. The fixing did not nclude the locking feature as the original, looked like it just pressed on. also the electrical connectors are on the opposite side of the mirror and would require extrending the original wiring. I will now just replace the glass. However,I stuck the original mirror back on with double sided tape!! that will be fun getting off.
 
I'm so glad this post was here,I noticed my passenger mirror wasn't defrosting this morning but the driver one did. Didn't even know it had heated mirrors. Followed the instructions to remove the glass and check the cables and to my surprise one had just come off. Yay. Funny how the simple things in life such as heated mirrors annoy me loads when they don't work. Out of interest, do the heater pads burn out or just keep on going?

Looks like i'm doing this,
closed the door the glass fell out and shattered on the road :( seems to have just been the glue between it and the backing plate has given up the ghost.
bought this off ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290804756388?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 so hopefully it'll do the job
 
My 2007 z4i sport, is now making a huge revenue for BMW. As both of my wing mirrors have now been replaced. BMW are not classing it as a wear and tear issue. However, if I'm replacing because they are sliding off the housing, then clearly these mirrors should be on the cars service for 'wear & tear' replacement parts.
