Replacing the rear pads on a 2.0i e89

With the electronic parking brake you are supposed to use a scan tool/ software to wind them back, but it can be done without, from memory I think you can unbolt the motor and then force the pads back, fit the new purchase new ones, use the brake pedal to re set and then re fix the motor, I’m sure there’s a YouTube video on it.

The pads are wound back with a torx bit after unbolting the actuator from the caliper, you may need a replacement sensor wire :thumbsup:

Oh dear this sounds bad.
And Do I need a replacement sensor wire if the sensor hasn't worn through?

I'm just replacing the pads early.

The problem is getting the old one out without breaking it, for the sake of a few pounds it’s easier just to replace it.
 
I've always changed the pads early on my 3 series cars and reused the sensor plugs. Is it different then on the z cars ? Dont they just sit in a slot ?

Yes they are the same bud, using a little sprung piece of steel to hold them in.
If the wires to the metal sensor are brittle or it gets stuck in the groove, then they can snap. If you are careful you can re-use them.

You do not need any special tools to replace pads (or discs) on an E89. Just leave the handbrake off, it doesn't auto re-apply.
The only slightly tricky part is winding back the piston on the e-brakes so the thicker new pads will fit. It is quite simple and obvious once you take the motors off. I did it easily and I am a numpty!
Once complete the e-brake will self-calibrate as the motors work via current sensors. It can be quite disconcerting when you first pull the handbrake button as the motors seem to 'whirr' for ages, but they will sort themselves out.

I've got a really cheap trolley jack (not low access), and it fits just groovy with mm to spare :D
 
I can confirm that when I tried reusing the “old” good condition brake sensor the car refused to reset the service interval and registered an error. It’s only when I fitted a new sensor did it all behave. The manual states the system specifically checks that the sensor has been changed by monitoring changes in resistance.

I re-used both of mine. They are still on the car with no issues whatsoever. :thumbsup:

The above may only be relevant if the sensors have been 'fired', ie made a circuit with the disc?
 
Well mine had not issued any warnings prior to changing but the pads were well used. The manual states the resistance is checked to check on the status of the sensor. One assumes then that if the sensor was in “pristine” condition it could be re used with no problems.
 
I have replaced the pads now on the car . I'm having trouble resetting the service mileage. When it says reset after getting into the menus, the tiny little clock comes up and goes round for about 5 second but then nothing resets. The mileage stays at 2900
It was on about 4000 and one day it did flash up red replace pads soon or something and there is a small filed down part on the sensor but I'm surprised at how much meat is still on them really.


Any thoughts.??
 
Type in search reset brake pads.
Someone did post a solution on their car, like having hand brake off.
I had the same problem, at the time a indy used an Autel reset tool.
I just leave them off pads now.

New brake pad sensor required..

Hand brake must be off - that is another one that caught me out - what he said!

If my memory serves me right I had to reset mine with the handbrake in the off position :thumbsup:
 
I've tried it all now
The sensor has grazed the disc. For the life of me at 3000 miles I don't know why but it has. I can only assume it's shorted .
I've order an eBay special so let's see what happens.
