Replacing standard headunit - 2006 E85

Hi

2006 3.0Si

Standard headunit has no Bluetooth, USB or aux

My friend has offered me his Alpine at a very good price. It's about 5 years old but has everything I need

Questions - is replacement a simple case of swapping out the old one and installing the new one? Is any coding needed? What about the steering wheel controls? Will these work and if not what adapter is needed?

Any other info helpful, thankyou :)

Which unit are you replacing, I"m looking for Business CD in grey

You sure there's no aux? I didn't think mine had one but it's on the underside of the dash below the stereo above the ashtray. Hard to see if you don't know it's there's.

No, you need a BMW to ISO loom, so unless he has an E85 then he won't have it. I have one to sell but it doesn't to steering wheel buttons, if you want those to work then you need an adapter for that too assuming your head unit will accept them.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141256761777

Has all you need to get a single din in the z4. Might be able to get it cheaper separately but do check

That looks like it has everything, and is pretty reasonable all in. Power lead with MFSW box is at least £25 on its own.

Absolute legend. Can't thank you enough for this!

Just looking into this further. From doing more searching people say if I have the 10 speaker system (which I do) it's more complicated and I need all new wiring?

Never had these kind of issues with Audio before on any of my cars!

Appreciate anyone's help as I'm looking to purchase and install everything tomorrow

This is the thread where people say the 10 speaker system needs new speaker wiring too?

One small bit of advice is that if your head unit has Bluetooth, you should fit the mic for the phone when you fit the stereo. The mic goes up in the light cluster.

It's a pretty easy job to do, but on fitting mine to a a Z4 I've just bought with an aftermarket stereo...i really wished the previous owner had taken the time to fit the mic when changing the unit.

There's a couple of tutorials on YouTube if it's something you want to do. It took me about an hour and the phone now works perfectly.

Thanks for that. I'm fine with fitting it but from my research I've read all sorts of stories about the 10 speaker system not working and needing a full rewire to work with a new headunit?

Aha, see I've got the basic 6speaker so had no issues. I don't know much about 10 speaker system. But last I looked i think it'd be easier for you to fit a grom module rather than a whole new headunit. Which will give you the things people usually look for.

Sorry to be a pain but doesn't anyone have any definitive Answers on what's needed for the 10 speaker system upgrade the headunit please

If it doesn't have the optical Amp then I think it's possible. Not got it myself and not got the wiring diagrams handy at the moment. Have a search because I think it has been done.

I had an aftermarket unit put in and mentioned possible problems with 10 speaker setup not working properly.
They just looked at me as if I was simple and said - no , should just plug in.
Which it did apparently.
Mind was a pioneer head unit.
Apparently it didn't even need a separate adapter for the mfsw button either.
I didn't fit myself so can't comment much more than that- but seems like 10 speakers not actually a problem.
Might be dependant on the actual head unit I guess?

I've got the 10 speakers and a Pioneer head unit and it works fine....i bought the car like that though so can't comment on the fitting.

Mines a Pioneer DEH 80PRS if that makes any difference.
