Replacing Sport Seat Foam

Hi guys,

I’m looking to replace the seat bolster foam on my drivers side seat as it’s started to crush down.

Has anybody done this before? The replacement foam section is available from BMW, but is it just a case of removing the seat, taking the leather cover off and replacing the foam, or are there any tricky parts to removing the leather cover etc. that I’m likely to encounter?

My seats are heated too if that makes much of a difference.

Cheers,

Fraser.

I've stripped and rebuilt my seats and don't see any problems. It'll be seat out (but whatever you do don't turn on the ignition once loom is off else airbag warning is triggered), then the back can be separated for ease of working. The heated seat pad is only on the centre section so no issue there.

How much are the bolster foam pieces Fraser ? I didn't know you can get new ones & I'd be interested in seeing how you get on, as the idea of refurbing them is very appealing.

any pictures of the base without the covers.

does the leather just cover over or is it stuck down? im still keen to get a seat pad base replacement and cut off the bolsters to make it flat.

They're about £120 Bing...

Part number 3 on the diagram:

It looks like you actually get the full backrest foam for that price, so I'm assuming the seat heating would need to be transferred over. Does this seriously complicate things?

Ah, I was thinking about the seat base rather than the seat back. Couple of things - the quantity is 2 so I am guessing that you'd only need one ; also, those prices are not great guides, in my experience they are a little on the high side.

My passenger seat is fine replacing both bits of the drivers seat would be ace though. Do you know they are still available - you've spoken to Sopers or someplace else ?

Interesting that there appears to be a heating loom in the side bolsters themselves ? Are sports seats fully heated, base, back and sides ? I must pay more attention next time I have them switched on.

Yeah they're still available, It's been a while since I checked but I think the cheapest quote I got for one full seat back foam was around the £120 mark from bmwminiparts.

I'm sure mine do heat up on the base, back and sides, although I could be mistaken.

Ok - then with seats out split the rear heater loom, take the back off and on the bench peal the cover up.
I've forgot if you remove the rear seat panel and undo clips as last stripped down Jag seats ..

Hearting pads are bonded on so should just peal off to transfer to the new foam

Never removed the foam but I would assume it would be factory bonded to create a single piece of different densities else they would slide about over time.

Btw to take the seats out drop the roof raise the back of the seat vertical, drop base down to the runners and once 4 bolts are out centre the seat, THEN undo the harness as this make the seat compact and easy to get out without damage. Manual seats are easier

Does the base come apart just as easily cj, or is that trickier ?

From memory once the back is off you remove the side trims then about 4 torx bolts and the base comes out in on piece with its metal pan, foam and cover. I recall it was confusing first time to work out which were the torx to remove the base and which held the base together.

Back is really easy to get off. Once the seat is out if it has heated pads detach the loom that runs from the back to the base.

On each side of the seat back by pulling the leather back slightly you will see 2 torx bolts. Remove all 4 and the back lifts off its posts.
