Replacing / repairing interior parts

My new baby is in very good condition, with only a few tiny marks, but I'd like to fix some small bits.

The curved plastic trim directly underneath the handbrake lever, between the handbrake and hazard switch, has a fair few scratches on it. Can this be replaced easily?

Also, some of the metal, namely metal door pulls seem to have a few areas of lacquer chipped off, showing shiny metal rather than matt finish. What do people do about this? Have them rubbed down and re-lacquered?

All in all very very good condition, just these little niggles. Pic below :D

To replace that curved bit by the gearlever is a job and a half to do, your only option is to remove the entire centre console as there are 30 scres that hold the aluminium panel to the centre cosole and the bit of plastic you want to change.

Regarding the door pulls, if you mean the bit you pull on to close the door then they are any easy swap, there is a correct method of removal which has been posted on here somewhere.

Cool thanks, the curved plastic isn't so bad, not worth all that hassle.

The door pulls, yep the long metal door handles, I'd rather repair as they seem expensive to replace :?
 
Mine are both scuffed (door handles) too... would be nice to have the link to how to remove them the right way (without snapping the clips)

Tempted to replace mine though, new ones won't be cheap, but they will look good for many many years if you take care.

You could rub them back and re-spray/lacquer, but it'll be a different kind of looking finish as it's almost satin lacquer over chrome effect as standard.

I was thinking about the door handles - they annoy me as the finish does not match anything else in the interior! Can you get ones that are for example the brushed Aluminium if you have that dash?
 
I replaced my door handle trims not long after buying the car. It's easy to remove them without damaging them.
On the bottom edge there is a groove you slide a flat bladed screw driver into, twist the screw driver to pop off the handle, then slide the handle downwards and it will unclip fully.

They were about £16 each but I had a lot of trouble trying to get the correct finish. My Z4 came with Chromeline Anthracite, which is a darker, more satin finish than the others but BMW no longer make this finish :fuelfire: There's regular chromeline, which is much lighter, then there's a couple more silvery finishes, none of which look as good as Anthracite :thumbsdown: They all seem much cheaper, plastic looking :( In the end I had to settle for one of the newer finishes, but I can't remember which is was now.

I'm still on the look out for a better alternative....
 
With the curved bit, I think that if you take off the gearlever surround which allows you to remove the bit with the central locking button on it, then the curved piece slides forward and you can replace it that way? Anyone confirm that?

Yes wondermike, I recently replaced both these parts, cost was £30 and £15 respectively, 10 minute job, looks much better as there were scratches on the tray and a crach beside the hazzards button - but there are still a couple of scratches on the side sections which aren't viable to change for whats involved so would be good to get a good touch up paint to match the brushed ally finish instead - does anyone know of one.

Confirmed - easy :thumbsup:

Not sure if anyone has successfully touched up the ally, maybe it could make it look worse :idunno:
 
for the side trims, just pull them off...did mine, job done, don't over science it :)

Interested in replacing the centre bit though, another tweak incoming!
 
Off topic (and a bit late), what's to the right of your cd player? Third party bluetooth module?

Just investigated this as I'm interested too. The part number looks like it's 51167026223.

The part number for the door pull trim looks like 51417042877 for the left and 51417042878 for the right.

Please can anyone confirm?
