Replacing Mirror

Hi

Not sure if I'm being a bit dense but I thought it best to check with you guys. I'm replacing my mirror after my one swan dived into the road. I've just just looked at the back of it and there are 2 prongs (circled).

The Car Mirror housing is just showing a grey base (it's flaking away), but I'm not seeing anywhere to insert those prongs. I whipped the black plastic off and the two prongs look like they are the heating element.

Anyone know what these are supposed to attach to? or have I got the wrong mirror for my Z?

Cheers for your help :)

You're correct, they are for the heating. There should be a wiring loom coming into the wing mirror with two wires with spade connectors that plug onto them.

Thought all z's have heated wing mirrors.

Right, I'm guessing, I'll have to replace the plastic insert that's in there at the moment (mirrorless) is there are any instructions \ walk through?

Many thanks,

T1b

is that the new mirror or the old backing??

mine new one came with a heat pad stuck to it - but the prongs didnt fit so had to remove it and use the old backing...

It's a new mirror with new backing, the old backing is still in situ. Did manage to find some very good instructions on the site :)

then the wiring loom will still be plugged in to the old backing in situ.... simple solution, remove the backing off the new mirror, clean off any glue residue and stick new mirror to old backing :D

oh and in case you havent check the other side mirror too - I touched mine and it fell off in my hand :o

Ok, the old mirror backing is just a grey film like substance, I'm guessing this is the old glue? So I just get that off, but I didn't see any sort of hole where the elements can plug in.

Hmmm, was hoping to sort it tonight, the other one hasn't wobbled so I'll check it tonight :)

maybe some glue residue on the old backing... but it is mostly just the heat pad...

maybe take a photo ?

Here's the Mirror housing and what I think is the glue residue.

Can it just be "washed" out and new one stuck on? or do I replace the whole unit?

Cheers T1b

I pulled it off and it's the backing to the Mirror complete with heat element. The weird thing is, the replacement mirror I got has the heating elements on the upper left of the mirror, the one on the car is on the right :( Definitely got the right side as it fits.

There doesn't look like there's enough slack to reroute it either with the existing mirror back plate.

Does any one know how to get the back plate off? As the link I have, the instructions seem bit duff :(

that looks like what mine did, and I just stuck it to that.

I just peeled the new mirror off of the backing - carefully!

Right, I'm going to give this another go as I'm not entirely happy with the pads and I've managed to find a local halfrauds with the contact adhesive in stock. So it will be taking all the pads out that i put in, still had a bit of wobble when I road tested it.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Yay! :) Mirror fitted last night, was a massive faff (completely down to my impatience) put pads on which weren't great, had to remove the pads from both back of the heating element and the mirror, washed off the residue, dried, removed the mirror mounting bracket and cleaned that.

Used Contact Adhesive to re stick the heating element back to the mounting bracket, held in place then left to dry.

Then put the mirror glass on with the contact, drove down some horrific roads this morning, and there wasn't a single wobble!

Well chuffed :)

I think that Contact Adhesive should be part of every Zed owners emergency kit as you never know when the wobbles will strike :)
