Replacing diff

Not confirmed yet but top of the suspect list.
How easy is it to change the diff on one of these?
Seen lots for sale on fleabay but not many 2.2 ones, lots of 3.0 ones, will they fit off will the ratios be all to cock?..
Not fussed about sticking a LSD on her as she is now basically a weekend plodder

It's about a 4-5 hour job first time round when using ramps. An LSD is absolutely great but I doubt you want to send around £1300 when you can spend £200.

For the use I get out of her can't justify an LSD, the plan is to use her this summer then go for a 3.0 for next so really don't want to throw lots of money at the girl
So any diff will fit?

The diffs are all different ratios across the range.

Mike (ducklakeview) posted a table of ratios if I recall

So the first time you ever changed a diff on a e85 Z4 you done it in 2 hours!

Exactly what I was thinking.

Took me about 90 mins to get mine out, less to get the LSD back in and would be faster next time. Bear in mind my exhaust etc had already been off a few times so no fighting with the downpipe joint, and I have a lift.

That's pretty good going. I suspect a few of the older members on this forum struggle to get dressed in 90 minutes never mind getting a diff out

Maybe someone should point out that the TS has a 168k diff according to the ETK?

It's definately not a 1:1 swap, maybe it can fit with some extra work, maybe not.

Video of issue, try and put any acceleration on the car and you get a horrible graunching noise and jerking of road wheels which eventually causes DTC, ABS and traction control lights on
Turn off DTC and its drivable with normal acceleration but sounds like something is knocking underneath????

Another question on the diff....

Ratios......

The one in my 2.2 is a 3:45 I've found a 2.5 with 3:23 so does that mean it'll be longer in the gears tban a 3:45?
If so a 3.0 diff seems a better bet with roughly the same ratio and loads on eBay at the moment

Sorry to hi-jack, just want to simply add some knowledge to my mind bank.

What are the benefits of adding something like a quaife lsd to a 3.0i?
