Replacing Bonnet Cable

Hi,

The bonnet cable on my car is stretched, meaning the only way I can open the bonnet is for someone to lean on it while I pull the lever - it gets really annoying after a while! I took it in to BMW a while ago for a quote and they said that the part costs £20 quid, but the labour would be £230! Their reasoning behind it is that you have to take panels off the car to access it which takes time.

Has anyone else had to do this and is it fairly straight forward? I don't mind spending time doing it, but as long as it's something I'm capable of :)

Cheers.

I'd like to know the answer to this too as mine needs doing. I've tried the usual things like lubricating the catch etc. but to no avail. A local garage has quoted me £72 to fix (including parts) which seems very reasonable next to your quote!

That doesn't sound too bad. Funnily enough I had a business card put under my windscreen earlier today from an independent bmw specialist who I phoned and he quoted £100 plus parts but that's still a bit much really. It's a shame Lincolnshire isn't closer to me!

This came up quite a while ago and I remember because mine was just getting to the difficult feels-like-I-need-a-new-cable stage.

The suggested solution was to spray copious amounts of WD40 through the grille onto the bonnet catch. I didn't think it'd work for a minute as it was def a stretched cable imo but it was worth a try.

Worked a treat, no problems since, absolutely amazed. Worth remembering as a pre-winter check perhaps.
