Hello everyone,

I'm interested in replacing the 5 speed steptronic transmission on my 2005 BMW Z4 3.0i with a 6 speed manual transmission.

Well first of all, I'm a big fan of manual transmissions not only because it's faster but also much more fun to drive. But having said that, I'm concerned about the parts that need to be changed in the way of doing this update, like for example: radiator electric fan is 600W on the automatic vs. 400W on the manual, starter, odometer.

What other parts need to be changed?

Thanks for your concern and help.

Personally i would change the car :) Lots of work and parts involved, and not worth it imo.

Get a 3ltr with it all in :D

Definitely agree. In addition to it costing a fortune to do, you'll probably knock value off the car by changing it's original spec.

I wouldn't even consider buying a car that had been messed about with like that (unless it was insanely cheap)

+1

i wouldnt advise it. doing any conversion of this sort is costly, time consuming and will de-value the car

best bet is to sell it and buy the exact spec you are after

Well I've done gearbox swaps and transfer case changes and these are the sort of issues I have to overcome:

Physical mounting points of the box
propshaft type and length
final drive ratio needs changing
Removal and replacemnet of oil coolers, piping, etc.
Shifter needs swapping out to gearlever and associated linkage fitting.

It was tough on older non electronic cars bu for the Zed add eectronics need fixing from everything you can imagine - think ECU, dashboard display (D, R, N, etc.

Bottom line is nice idea but forget it and swap cars

.....think cj's put that one well and truly to bed....

Ha ha, but don't let me be negative.

Anything is possible - I took a 2 wheel Jeep, dropped in a 5.7 Chevy engine, a TH350 auto box and Atlas transfer case, different axles, ratios, lockers and suspension and created a pretty neat trick off road Jeep.

Never bothered me, but there are zero electronics on the Jeep :) That stuff scares me to even think about getting it working.

So OK - give it a go :)
