Replacement Tyres for 20 inch Rims

Good afternoon all, hope someone can assist. Took the car out on a drive today and suddenly the tyre wall has split badly and separated from the rim on the front near side, so now I’m in the process of replacing both front tyres. The question I am asking is does anyone else here run 20inch rims and if so what tyres (non run flats) do you recommend? Currently the tyres on the car are as follows which are the same as when purchased in September:

FRONT - ACHILLES
235/30 ZR 20 88W XL

REAR - MICHELIN PILOT SPORT 4S
255/35 ZR 20 97Y EX

Now the rears are fine and almost new but the front are awful and obviously the split has made me concerned that I would prefer a larger profile if possible, do you think a larger profile tyre could fit the front arch?

Thanks Ash

Without knowing the rim widths of your 20” wheels it’s not possible to suggest an appropriate tyre size.

I would guess that the rears are undersized for the likely rim width but without that data who knows.

Your tyre combination front /rear looks lethal IMHO :tumbleweed:

Thanks for your reply, yep silly me forgot you’ll need to know what alloy is on the car. I’ll take the tyre with rim to a local tyre depot to find out what is the correct fit. I don’t know what rims have been fitted but they are obviously not standard for the car but they are BMW.

Good move, FWIW I strongly recommend you pair those very good Michelins with a matching front pair..I’m confident your life will be suitably extended

Again, FWIW, there’s not much anecdotal evidence to suggest that the E89 will ride / handle well on 20” wheels. At least not without suitable chassis mods.

19” are normally considered the upper limit

Yes it can be a harsh ride, prefer 18s tbh with thicker profile.

I was anti 19" , my 20i came with 326M wheels and OE run flats and was horrible.

On my 35is with decent suspension (non OE), I've found 19" with non run flat michelins to be very acceptable.

Overall 18" is the sweet spot IMHO

[ref]Smash[/ref], looks like someone got the sizes a tad mixed up, for 19” they should be 225/35 R19 and 255/30 R19, the logical R20’s would be 225/30 and 255/25 which would be uncomfortable on the rears on UK roads. I can understand going up a profile to make things a little more comfortable but just going up two sizes on the rear will make a noticeable difference in performance, as in the car will accelerate less quickly. Perhaps this is an opportunity to get some used 18” alloys and new tyres, then sell the 20’s

Thanks for pointing this out, 225/30 and 255/25 would be rattle me to my bones. Maybe when funds permit in the summer I’ll treat myself to some 18/19 inch wheels and offload these.

Just think I’ve found the alloys, they are identical to M433 which usually are found in the 6 series BMW.

The more I look a it the more its style (if it is) over function..

In theory to match those existing rears you need 225/40 20..whether they would fit, rub on full lock or on suspension bottoming out who knows..

The front offset is wrong (although that could be corrected with spacers)

So apart from wrong size wheels, wrong size rear tyre even for that wheel, front offset badly wrong its all A OK

FWIW the existing front tyre size is badly wrong which will throw out the DCS etc..

Those rears are 51mm larger than stock, more worrying is that the speedometer will read -7% lower than normal, you might think you’re doing 30 in a 30 you’re actually doing 33 mph :o

Oh bloody eck, rains it pours. I’ll have a good chat at the garage tomorrow and see what can be done if anything. Might be on the lookout for some 18/19s now. Thanks for all the advice.
