Replacement soft top motor

Hi Guys ..new to the forum and was reading about everyone's problems with failed hood motors.

Had this problem for a while and finally got round to having the job done.

Reading the high prices forum members were paying I thought the least I could do is register and tell everyone of the great service I received especially for those living up north in the Lancashire area.

OK ... I was quoted £526 inc vat.
As confirmed by forum members they told me this is a common fault on the Z4... mainly down to a design fault.
Dropped the car off around 9 am and it was ready around 3 pm
The engineer showed me the old motor which looked like a rusted bucket.
They also explained why this had happened and informed me they had added a better drain hole to stop any water accumulating in future.
Job was fully guaranteed and they suggested I pop back once or twice a year and they would be happy to vacuum the motor area out etc.

So who were these guys...

The owner's name is Vic, all engineers are fully qualified and yes I know, only done yesterday but I am happy.

The new motor should last for a good few years as long as you check the drains on a regular basis.Its worth part opening the roof and cleaning were the roof meets the bodywork at the rear,you can get a build up there wihich gets washed into the roof well and blocking the drain holes.

Like yourself, im a newbie from up north, and i was also concerned with the stories of roof motors failing regularly.

From the many posts i have read, it seems having it relocated to the boot is the best bet, and depending on your preference, theres Dave up in Durham, or Bowser down South.

Infact, im heading up to Daves to have mine done next Monday. The drive is about 170 miles but it seems to be a nice drive, esp once i get onto the A1.

I only took delivery of my Zed 2 weeks ago, and have had it covered most days until i get the motor relocated, and with the downpour we have had im so glad i did!

But all the same thanks for sharing the company, i for one will note it down for future references :thumbsup:
 
I'm curious as to how they widened the drain hole. As far as I was aware, there is a tube that runs from the drain hole down to in front of the rear wheels, so unless the tube is much larger than the drain hole, drilling the hole wider would allow water and gunk to drip down to where, I wonder?
Oh, and it's not a design fault. BMW designed a perfectly good drain hole/tube, and it's clearly your fault if you don't regularly clear it of blockages to ensure the water doesn't back up and damage your roof motor... What do you mean the dealer/seller never told of this requirement, and it's not in any of the user manuals, or documentation? Well, you should have just known :headbang: :headbang: :roll:

I'm also going up to Dave's next week to have the motor relocated to the boot. A 200 mile journey for me but well worth it I think for peace of mind and a bargain at £80.
 
At £526.00 I think you've done OK, I've seen a lot higher prices quoted, but if you can get a good job done locally to save travel and possible warranty costs, all well and good. Not had the pleasure of a roof motor failure so far, this has probably put the mockers on it??
 
Hi all, i've just joined the forums. My wife has a 2006 Z4 2.0i.
She has owned it for about 8 months. Unfortunately the roof motor has failed (water ingress) in the last few weeks. Luckily, the roof motor was only replaced within the last 12 months (previous owner). She has taken it back to the garage who replaced the motor and explained the failure and warranty is still within 12 months. The garage has sent the car to our local BMW dealership who have investigated the fault, and denied any responsibility. They have billed the garage over £300 for the investigation work. The garage are also denying any responsibility saying its a failure of the motor, which is BMW's fault. We are now stuck in the middle and facing a potential massive bill to have the motor replaced. The car is only worth about 5k. Can anyone advise if we have any legal rights, before I ring this mechanic bloke and source a new motor. Summer is on its way and my missus is in a right mood. Luckily this mechanic is only half hour away. PLEASE HELP!
 
Get the car back and let the garages fight each other over the £300.

Then take it to the local guy and get him to fit the new one in the boot...sorted :thumbsup:
 
Thanks. I didn't realise its a separate pump and motor. Is it just normally the motor that fails. Its annoying that BMW are not admitting any fault, even though its their part and within 12 months old.
