Replacement Roof Motor Guy!!

I've now had the roof motor and hydraulics replaced twice, two years apart, by my local dealer - Grassick's of Perth - who are excellent but not cheap! But both times the work was done under warranty, lucky me. However I have huge sympathy for those who've had to stump up wads of cash. As I live in a forest and the car is not under cover, it would appear that the problem has been caused by pine needles blocking the relevant drain hole, so in an attempt to prevent this happening a third time I've:

1) purchased a half cover which hopefully will keep the roof clear of pine needles etc, so they don't get washed down into the mechanism
2) at the suggestion of the Grassick's mechanic inserted a very thin length of plastic tubing in the drain hole which I can manipulate every two or three months to clear any obstructions.

Any and all comments welcome...

Just joined the club and I thought the facelift was meant to be improved
Mine has always been garaged ,3rd car so only gets used in fine weather
Only done 26k miles
The whole area under the roof was clean and dry and the drain holes squeeky clean ( Dealers description ) until they got to the pump and even casing was clean BUT had about an inch of water in it and corrosion
Interesting they commented that there was no drain hole in casing ,so I will be following that up
They also agreed that that area is meant to have water but are perplexed why it is so clean yet pump has water in casing
I was using the Dealer as I have BMW Insured warranty ........beginning to look like a waste of the monthly premium
I plan to ask BMW exactly how I should use the car in future to avoid a repeat performance

Just off to polish the credit card :(

Do you mean from underneath the car? Or from the top when the roof is down? My motorside has water that collects in it but I have not been able to release that water by pushing a thin metal wire down it. On the drivers side I did the same procedure and it unblocked the drain.

There is definitely a drain hole in the plastic casing ?? appreciate indication of where it is meant to be
Dealer at first look can't see one ,thanks

The thin tubing is strapped to the suspension strut underneath the car and is threaded through the full length of the drain tubing, bend past the body of the roof motor and just peeks out when the roof is down, so I should be able to do this without getting under the car, although I could reach under if necessary!
The drain hole is only visible if the roof motor etc has been removed...

I'm hoping that the half cover will solve the problem and that the tubing arrangement won't be necessary, but I do live in a highland forest with many larch trees, which shed their needles in the autumn...

We'll see.

Can you post pictures of the tubing? Brilliant idea

I think I mis-read your post. Are you saying that when your roof motor was replaced they inserted the thin tubing? - this makes more sense and would explain why you dont need to get under the car to manipulate it.

Sorry if I was unclear: it's only possible to do this bit of tubing thing whilst the roof motor is out. I'd attach a pic but there isn't really much to see. Once the roof motor is out the drain hole is very clear and it's obvious where the bit of tubing goes. Just thread it down until it appears underneath the car and secure it in place by strapping down the bottom end with a cable tie, making sure that it's long enough so that the top end is visible/grabb-able beside the roof motor.

My only concern now is that the tubing itself may cause a blockage, larch needles behave as though they've been dipped in glue, but I'll just have to monitor that...

...or move house!

Bowser, I have tried to PM you regarding replacing my roof motor, but its sitting in my outbox not my sent items box so not sure if youve got it. Any chance you could hit me up on here if you dont get the PM and i'll try again

Bowser 134 are you still able to do Z4 Roof Motor Repairs? Mine went some time ago and I think it is time to get it fixed. Are you able to help?

Just wondering if roof motor repair still possible?

Ross (Bowser) is quite a busy bloke, so can be hard to get hold of. I'm sure he's still doing the motors. He moved mine to the boot...top bloke
