Replacement keys

I only have 1 key for my ZM and live in constant fear of losing it. What are my options for getting a spare? Is it going to be a Vaseline and bending over experience from the dealers, and if so, what kind of cost an I looking at?

I was in the same situation so contacted Ben from bmkeys. He's the guy on ebay.

I drove to his place in east ham, London. He cut and coded me a new diamond shape remote and a valet key. Both work perfectly.

He also coded my roof to open from the key, and turned on audio beeps when locking/unlocking.

Think I paid about £50 all in. Dan

I got a key blank cut at local locksmith for £5, going to code it next weekend when kit arrives. So might be able to help if you can't make it all the way to London!

I don't really want to travel too far, nor send anything away that will immobilise the car. By the time I take fuel and added mileage, it might not be much cheaper than £150 from the stealers. If anyone knows of any way other than the stealers then id love to hear.

Well... what year is your car? I am expecting to have my kit end of this week. I will aim to do mine and if I can do the programming then tbh we might be able to sort something out. I am planning to come up to Edinburgh again before july so maybe theres a chance of sorting something? If you are willing to wait then let me know and I will let you know when my plans a bit more sorted.

I know when I go into the stealers that put my key through a desktop gizmo which then brings up all the cars details including service history (provided done by BMW) on their computer screen - will this be the same for non BMW replacements.....just a thought.

I believe the keys can be read by bmw still as another member who had the Bentley flip key cut said he took it in to bmw and they plugged it in fine. Haven't tried mine at bmw yet though

The key contains the cars vin number and mileage, so I imagine that the bmw computer is retrieving the service history via the vin.
